19th, Naval: Master and Commander.
I still don't understand why this film so underrated... too cerebral for the unwashed masses perhaps?
IN-HOC-SIGNO-VINCES
exactly my though. I really like the movie, but none of my friends really do, i think its because there a little dull and they only like action comedys, regular comedys, horror, and movies like 300 with nonstop action. The just dont recognize a good movie when they see one.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaance the night away
Master and Commander is probably the best movie ever with sailing warships fighting it out.
Master and Commander:
Too bad they over dubbed that music. I remember in the theater it was so cool when the french ship first fired through the fog and the whole theater shook. And what a neat twist at the end. So where is the sequal?
I have nothing against the womens movement. Especially when Im walking behind it.
“Great empires are not maintained by timidity.” ― Tacitus
Master and Commander ranks highly for me. One of my favourite films ever; it's just so consummately made, beautiful cinematography, gripping battle sequences, perfect period atmosphere.
CA using it as a touchstone of what to expect from naval battles makes me happy.
The movies/tv series I know that are set in enlightenment era:
*Master and Commander: the far side of the world - probably the best naval movie of this era
*Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy - nothing historical here, just 4fun
*The three musketeers (1993) - great movie based on Duma book
*The Patriot - I cry like a baby in this one as well as in Braveheart
*Last of the Mohicans (1992) - just brilliant movie in all aspects
*Sharpe tv series 14 episodes - best tv series depicting this era
*Hornblower tv series - good, but sharpe is da best
*Waterloo (1973) - cool classics, love the massive fighting scenes
*Gettysburg - well not quite fitting into this era (middle of 19th century), but friggin awesome and very long movie.
Btw here's a great site historical movies in chronological order
So that's the movies I've seen/liked the most, it's about time we start reading books and revising our video libraries on 18-19th centuries history guys![]()

Heres a 17th century one
The Man in the Iron Mask
Man in the iron mask-13/13-A
Recognize Robert De Niro there.
Heres one of my all time favorites since I was a kid.
The Sea Hawk Trailer [1940]
16th century really how ever.
I cant find a video of this But it has one of the best ship on ship battles ever filmed
Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951)
Gregory Peck ... Capt. Horatio Hornblower, R.N
Virginia Mayo ... Lady Barbara Wellesley
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc
And this I guess is 16th ans well as its Cortez.
March from CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE
And how about all the Zorro Movies?
I have nothing against the womens movement. Especially when Im walking behind it.
so far the only thing I have not seen is a Version of War and Peace
Still nothing really 18c either
And if your going to say Gettysburg then how about Gods and Generals
The three musketeers setting is in the early 17th century.
- Rob Roy : a few Skirmishing battles between Scots versus english, excellent movie.
- Fanfan la Tulipe : french movie, a few mass battles, more comical than historical. Lame movie, even if there is Penelope Cruz
- Beaumarchais, l'insolent : a gun dealer working for france sending secretly weapons to the american revolutionaries.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one, yet:
- Mutiny On The Bounty (The '62 version, of course; gotta love Brandon's mimical acting... that arrogance...)
-Der Ketzerfreund.
"Oh, to be truly happy! To be an imbecile." - Wobbly Headed Bob
Barry Lindon...
How about we list books aswell? Novels and history books.
The Military Experience in the Age of Reason - Christopher Duffy
Sharpe Novels - Bernard Cornwall (TV series is better)
Hornblower Novels - C.S Forester
- Le Colonel Chabert. A movie about a veteran of the French-Russian Napoleonic war (played by Gérard Depardieu) returning home after having been reported dead... Beautiful!
-Der Ketzerfreund.
