I have some settlements where the only option in the building screen is to turn the village into a castle.
I don't want a castle. I want to start building stuff, but I can't.
What's going on?

So in some cases, the best thing would be to lower taxes, right?

Also, do forts have to be at the right place to stop an army? Can the enemy just go around like any other character on a map or is a fort given a special effective radius bonus?
Well yeah, but if you built farms as one of your first buildings, settlements would be evolving just in time when you built all the buildings possible, at least in my experience. So in some cases, the best thing would be to lower taxes, right?
I'm not too sure about this, I usually only build them near mountain passes and other choke points (the boundary of France and Spain, with the mountain ranges are a good spot). Also, do forts have to be at the right place to stop an army? Good advice. Either you are all out of buildingd to build (for that settlement size) or else you have NOT chosen the "Manage all settlements option. In this latter case, you may not build unless you have a governor in the city.Originally Posted by delra
My guess is that your settlement is too small. You will get a game message when your city expands to the next level.
The population was too small.
There were no buildings there except for 1. Land clearance. What a joke.
There are some buildings in my castles that seem like duplicates.
I already have the capability to recruit mailed knights and armoured sergeants on horses, but in the building queue that lists the available buildings I can build, there is a knights stables that allows the recruitment of the exact same soldiers I have.
Can somebody explain? Thanks.
The stable building allows you to recruit more of them, it enlarges the recruitment pool so they come faster.
