    Wow.

I actually had to verify this using paint and cutting the two colours side by side.

    Amazing!

Wow, that one's really good. Even knowing the answer, looking at the thing I STILL think one is darker than the other.

I'm using photodraw and I can verify that they are the same, but even with them joined together it look like A's darker, I'm now very confused...

LOL I know, I used the gimp select color too on the original image and when they both came up 120 120 120 I was very surprised.

what bullcrap, theyre totally different colors.

Also, who says that every human being sees colors in exactly the same way? I've known for many years that colors are often subjective. Someone might say a car looks more red than orange and I'll say it looks more orange than red. Then some chick walks by and tells us its auburn, and we believe her.

You need to listen to Ben Kenobi, Dude.
It has been surmised, that perhaps, my lord had become like a wild animal that had been kept too long. Perhaps, but whatever... freedom... so long an unremembered dream, was his.
The children of Doom...Doom's children. They told my lord the way to the mountain of power. They told him to throw down his sword and return to the earth...HA!! time enough for the earth in the grave.

oh please, everything ben kenobi taught was totally metaphorical and figurative, man.

If we cant trust our eyes to give us an accurate picture of reality, then how am I ever gonna trust my eyes again? Next time I'm driving and see a stopsign, ill second guess myself and wonder if it is indeed a stopsign, or just a yeild sign. Afterall, if we cant tell the difference between shades then perhaps we cant tell the difference between shapes either.

The colors are the same, use any program you want to check it.

but my eyes say something different, this is the very definition of consensus reality.

Its a good thing to know though, in the same way its good to know that a fata morgana in the desert is not a good thing to go walking after.

well, a good trick is if you put your fingers in front of the monitor in order to cover up the other squares... then you will see they are the same color. You could also click on "wikipedia" below the image, to read the wiki article, which has a short animated gif to help you understand as well.

I had the same response bulletproof turban, but I checked the colors out with my color meter and they are indeed the same. There is slight variations from one side of the 'shadowed' square to the other. But although my eyes refuse to believe it, all my meters show them to be the same.

    That is a great trick

Colour constancy or, if you're American or wikipedia, color constancy.
Your brain monkeys around with colours so that you continue to recognise objects. Otherwise cars would change colour as they travelled from light into shade. Grass would look green at midday and reddish at sunset. The world would be a confusing place.
Maybe consensus reality is the reality that different parts of our brains decide is reality.
The consensus is between different collections of neurons working together to form temporary sets. The synchronous activity of the neurons in the temporary set leads to conscious awareness of the object we are seeing. As awareness shifts to another object or to a memory associated with said object a different set of neurons becomes involved.
It is possible to record neuronal activity pulsing at a frequency of 40 to 70 Hz. This is faster than alpha or beta waves and may be the electrical record of a synchronous neural set.

Are they talking about the colour of the letters or of the square?

Wow okay maybe not. They are the same. MS paint doesn't lie.

Here, for those who need more to believe...

    I've simply minimized the image.

Now I've zoomed in. Still looks the same.

Here are the two squares taken away from the rest of the image. Same color.

Now the squares are moved, "A" over the spot of "B". You can see that "A" is indeed the same color as "B".

Here again you can see that "A" is not dark, but is the same color as "B".

    HOPE THAT HELPED!

Hmm, why is that. Is the shadow that effective in masking or merging the surroundings to look as if it's a completely different colour?
