Default Ability to force-change gamma (brightness) settings?

I've asked this in the R:TW technical section but didn't get any responses and it is a problem that doesn't just effect RTW, so I'll ask it here. Anyways, here's my situation. I own a Radeon 9800 and an old 17" CRT monitor. Back when I was using a Radeon 9200 with the same monitor I never had any difficulty with in-game gamma - the games were never too bright or too dark. After purchasing my 9800, however, the standard gamma setting on the computer was quite a bit darker - so dark, in fact, that night scenes on movies I was playing on my desktop were pitch black (despite pumping the brightness button on my monitor as high as it could go. The same went for computer games that didn't allow me to change the gamma settings in-game. Eventually I discovered the ATI software program that allowed me to change the brightness and that fixed most of my problems. Some games, however, continued to automatically revert my monitor back to its former dark "standard" setting. If the game allowed me to adjust the brightness in-game this wasn't a problem, but RTW doesn't offer that option. I've recently installed EB 0.82 and one of the few complaints I've read regarding the game is that it is very dark, literally. On my rig the graphics are so dark, the battlefield units can't be distinguished from the grass, rendering the game unplayable. And so I ask:

Is there any way to brighten the graphics, other than increasing the monitor brightness (i.e., using the monitor button or using the ATI Catalyst Control slider)? I've searched google, gaming forums, you name it, and I can't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated - otherwise I won't be able to play RTW for at least another year

I had exactly the same problem with X2 The Return. The game was far to dark, I couldn’t read the in game text and there was know in game brightness or gamma setting to alter this. I believe the developers said space was dark anyway hence why the game was so dark.

The programme I used was called DarkAdapted , it worked well with X2 to but it didn’t always work with other games. I haven’t used it for over a year now so hopefully it will be less flaky.
