Well, what is your audio device; do you have a sound card, or just use onboard (that of the motherboard) sound?

I had a similar problem to this when I built my computer back in September. It was caused by an IRQ conflict, the two devices that were conflicting were the sound card (Creative X-Fi) and a 4 port USB control card. It was too much hassle to solve the conflict so in the end I ended just removing the USB control card and the sound card now works perfectly.

Have you recently installed any additional PCI devices to your computer?

Use system restore to set you system back to a point when sound was working fine.

If I remember correctly, you should not system restore until all other options are exhausted. Wait for those clever peepz to tell you what to do.

Agree. Have you tried new drivers for your sound?
If you're not sure what sound device you have, you can find it here:
Start --> control panel --> System --> harware --> device control

That'll give you a list of all your computer hardware. Under sound there's a list of items that looks like this:

Mine's in dutch, just disregard that . You can see I have a sounblaster live! 24-bit. Yours should be there too.

If there anything wrong with you drivers you'll have an exclamation mark there. Which means trouble.

But just start of by googling the latest drivers of your soud card.
