Has anyone ever received...substantial military assistance from an ally?

I think the most I've ever seen done is that in one campaign an ally, when I asked for assistance against a mutual enemy, blockaded a port. I gave them enough denarii to raise a whole stack and they blockaded a port. In every other instance I've never seen any results from getting 'assistance' from an ally.

Is this how it is for others?

not on RTR. On 1.3 rtw i got some support from macedon as greek against the romans. maybe half a stack support and we lost anyway against 2 or 3 stacks. so unless RTR has wiped out data help is possible.

How!? Did the half-stack show up a couple of turns later? Did it just spawn? I'm thinking maybe I didn't wait long enough or something.

(they sent an army to help me in a battle but at the end it said as they had fielded all of 100 more men than me they got to keep the province)
What did you do!? Did you end up going to war with your ally?

No, to me they assault you eventually just because you share borders,

the best you can do is get trade rights and station intimidating armies at the

    border

A few times I have had an ally stack nearby when a battle started with me and they have assisted during the battle. I use this technique to get allies into wars with my enemies. If I attack enemy ships adjascent to one of my allies ships they will participate in the battle and go to war. They never send troops to help me, only to further their own ends. This sometimes helps me though. In one case myself and Gaul were at war with one faction and Gaul seiged a town. They lost the seige but took down the garrison a lot as well allowing me to take the city easier.

By far the most usefull purpose of an ally to me is to draw off enemy forces. A major part of my Bactrian campaign was getting the Ptelomics into an alliance with me and at war with TSE. This battle of the titans drew off much of the TSE's strength away from me. I had a good alliance with Parthia going for a while as well that kept the Seleucids occupied while I took the Indian cities.
