Default Does the AI honor alliances?

So 2 other AI factions are allied together. 1 of them is strong, but the other one I could wipe out moderately easily. The weaker one approached me and demanded I pay them 50 florins each turn (for 2 turns) or they would attack me.

I'm already in a war on the other side of my border.

So, if I decline and the faction attacks me, is the other AI faction more likely to break the alliance because I am not the aggressor?

Or is this not taken into account?

It depends on how strong you are and your reputation.

If A is stronger and has closer ties to C then it'll most likely break B from what I've seen so far in vanilla.

Yep, also new new alliances are easier to be made if you have a stronger military and a positive reputation. If you start an alliance when you're reputation is unreliable or worse there's a big chance they will ask a lot of money for it and betray you in a small amount of time.

Vanilla diplomacy is horrible now that I've played CAE and SS.

The AI does help each other, and I believe I've had a spain army help me seige bordeaux once, and i was there first. I have seen 2 HRE and the french gang up on my in my first ever M2TW campaign so alliances were much better then RTW imo

Medium is usually the best. VH will have your reputation fall down the stairs like there's no tomorrow.

To boost reputations try and occupy or release if you can. This not only makes you more chivarlious but it boosts your reptuation.

Sacking/ransoming is neutral so nothing happens there and extermination is the one that brings it down.

If A is at war with D who is at war with B but allied/neutral to A, then relations will improve as your helping B fight D.

Keeping the pope happy as well (By keeping high cahtolic faith) also helps.

The Holy Roman Empire sounds like a really huge faction.

I'm playing as the Venetions so I only see their 1 settlement near my capital. Without giving away too many spoilers, are they a really big faction or is the name misleading. (you know how the roman empire was huge)

It depends on each game. You can see how big a faction they are at the start from the layout when first choosing your own faction. In my current game they have only 3 provinces, but I've seen them with 15 or so in other games... :german:

Well, some AI tweaking mods really help out. In LTC, I've had one Byzantine campaign where both the Turks and Egypt honored any alliance with me (and each other!) for over 100 turns. All three of us starting beating up on the Mongols together.

    *sniff*

Almost brought a tear to my eyes to see the Muslims getting along so well with each other and with me... And this is considering that I left Nicaea totally defenseless the whole time with only a skeleton garrison!

Now Venice.... I couldn't trust them as far as I could through Milan - which as you all know isn't very far at all.
