Default Gallic mercs everywhere, Greek auxilia no infantry?

Playing RTRPE mod switch version, so far so good, no CTDs. I'm looking for help on the following (apologies if this is already in the forum, I could not find it):

    1) Playing as the Republic of Rome and just landed near Carthage, I was surprised to see I could hire Gallic mercenaries (eg swordmen, cavalry etc) as well as African mercernaries. Same thing near Sparta, I could hire Gallic units as well as Greek units. Is this OK or is it some kind of bug?

    2) Playing as Republic of Rome, the Auxilia Phase II buildings in the Greek areas do not provide any infantry. It looks like the first auxilia unit Rome can recruit in the Greek AoR is the Peltastai (Phase II + Practice Range). Is this OK or is it some kind of bug?

    3) Is there any updated version of the AoRs map? The only one I could find is at http://www.rometotalrealism.com/preview.htm

    Glad for your help

I was about to ask the same question. I recruited some Gallic mercenaries in Asia Minor....which was quite unusual, as this area is directly the opposite of Eastern/Western Europe where the Gauls do reside.

I can explain the Gallic mercs part. Carthage recruited a lot of Gauls to act as mercenaries for them, and the ones in Asia Minor are there because of that darn fool Nicomedes.

In general mercenaries travelled to some distances in search of work so I think it is normal to be able to hire them a bit further away then their home region. That`s one thing. Another is that certain factions used a lot of mercenaries and the only way to give them access to them in game was to make them available in their home area. This is the example with Carthage. As a player you can send a fleet to gaul or northern italy and get some gallic mercs, but the AI will not do such a thing so some of the mercenaries most likely to have been part of the carthaginian armies can be recruited in the area around Carthage. Whether the Ai actually recruits these mercs is another story. It also gives the human player the posibility of getting these "popular" mercs from there instead of sending a family member with a fleet all the way to gaul. I think the foreign mercs have a lower replenish rate anyway. You can jsut presume that they came in smaller groups with smaller transports.
As for Sparta, I`m not sure exactly why Sparta has gallic mercs, but there is another thing to take into consideration. These regions are groupped in a text file. Sparta is not the only greek region to have access to that merc pool. And these "gauls" are probably intended to represent the ones that ravaged the balcans and ended up(some of them at least) in Asia Minor. It`s the reason why you recruit them in Galatia.
You`ll also notice that there are thracian mercenaries in asia and egypt. That`s because the seleucids and ptolemaics used a lot of them in their armies. IIRC there were about 3000 thracian settled in Persis in a millitary colony by the seleucids. So you might just as well have been able to recruit them there as aor, but they are just mercs in RTRPE. It applies to other troops too. Like galatians and cretans in egypt and in the syrian region.

For some reason the romans don`t have access to the greek heavy units. I don`t remember exactly why. I remmeber there were threads on the matter time ago.

That site is not connected with RTR anymore. It`s a long story, but the idea is that it`s not the Official one. This is:
    http://www.totalrealism.net/
Anything on the .com site is not supported by the RTR team.
As for an up to date aor map I don`t think there is one.
