How can one convince a faction to become a vassal?
I saw in one thread someone posted a really long post about it. You could look for it I guess. But it was basically about how instead of paying outrageous amounts for it, the faction you want as your vassal has to have being ur vassal state its best option. Like say It is reduced to low amount of armies, low money, and low land this will help. Then if your borders are neighboring with it or something like that it will also help. Theres alot more in that post but I can't seem to remember where it is.
You're right, there was a thread somewhere, I can't seem to find it.
Basically, make it appealing for them. If you're crushing them from the north, and they have enemies in the south, such that you would protect one entire border of their kingdom, then it makes it alot easier for them to agree.
I've also heard they agree more readily after suffering crushing defeats, as well. Realistically, this makes sense. I'm not quite sure if it's so in the game engine.

I made france become my vassel yersterday, they had 3 regions left. I had beaten all their armies and so forth, plue they were at war with england, this made them safe as england was my ally, could of been another reason they accepted.

How I made France my vassal as England:
Basically, I built my army. The powerful French king, all on his own, attacked Caen. I killed him. Then, I killed 2 more French nobles, and captured Anjou. I captured Brettany (whatever its called). I used a British captain to beat a French captain and become Man of the Hour. I spammed spies and put them in French cities. Finally, I proposed to a captain (captain! remember. captain!) and he accepted. Later, Portugal took the lower French cities, and Denmark took Rheims. Finally, the French leader died of old age.
I was wondering if there was any benefits. Like do Vassals give you automatic tribute or something?
it's not easy to get vassals but it's fun;
you need to keep a good reputation - mine was very reliable when i played as england (i never attacked anyone, just getting attacked ; always release prisoners and never exterminate or sack pouplation - unless absolutly needed);
i manage to get france, portugal, genoa, denmark, hre and venice as my vassals; the sicilians refused no matter what i've offered them, even when to the last city with just a few troops left.
and in the end i made timurids my vassals, right after they took antioch (i gave them 900k florins for that) - just for fun
what how did you get 900,000 florins, especially with the army upkeep costs, thats just killer.
i'll be lucky to keep my coffers above negative.
it was way easier in rome, even though in rtw, cities went bankrupt, and in this game, the cities make alot of money, but you still endup being bankrupt.

Skoalchawnker, try playing with Egypt and conquer Acre, Antioch, Jerusalem, Gaza and Adana as fast as possible if you want a campaign where you earn loads of money. This is perfect to get a real nice income at the beginning and if you start expanding then you'll have loads of money. I used to be bankrupt all the time. But then I tried playing as egypt and I managed to beat the mongols and control the whole middle east and I'm now expanding into Russia.
I am playing as the HRE.
How my campaign has went so far.
- Went after rebel towns and Poland.
- Conquered Northern Italy
- Bought cities from France in the West to Russia/Hungary in the East from my insane economy (currently: 300.000 florins)
- Conquered "France" from various powers (leaving France with Bordeaux and Pamplona)
- Conquered Toledo, Zaragoza and Valencia from Spain, which resulted in them accepting vassalship.
To get a vassal I would think these factors matter: Power, global reputation(It is a good idea to have very reliable or better, when asking for people to become a vassal) and political issues (having me as an overlord resulted in peace treaties with 4 other factions for Spain)
Here are some cool threads I found on this topic:

I got France as a vasal with the Moors.
They had one region left, Angers, that I had my sights set on. They were very weak and I had been at war with them off and on the whole game and I was about ready to destroy them. Then a diplomat came to me with a request to cease fire.
Before I laughed in his face I counter offered that if he agreed to become my vassal, I would give him 3000 florins for 3 or 4 turns and I would give him Paris back. They happily accepted and its been history since.
I have a very untrustworthy reputation too. I would send assasins and spys to destroy my neighbors cities and cause them to revolt. I destroyed the Milanese faction without killing a single one of their soldiers.
Does anyone know exactly what the benefits of a vassal are though? Do you get tributes or is it just an alliance.
I am playing Hungary now on medium difficulty, and I made the Mongols my vassal without paying anything, even though they held most of the regions east of Nicaea (at least ten regions). I think in my case it was because the Mongols had about half a dozen enemies including the Timurids (who had just recently arrived) and no allies, while I was the opposite with eight allies and them and Portugal as my only enemies, so perhaps they were extremely desperate for peace... and my diplomat had 9 influence. The Turks and Egypt (or, more correctly, what remained of them) whom they bordered were two of my allies, so that might have had a part in this too.
@frenchbane
you get a part of their profits every turn (sometimes it's nothing, sometimes it's nice profit) and right of passage for your armies
