Default Please help me change the medieval.preferences.cfg file to a .txt file!

    Hello everyone,

I have a Vista machine now and I own Med. 2 Total War.

All I'm trying to do is change the medieval.preference.cfg file to a .txt file but my system isn't allowing it to fully happen!

My procedure (which failed) and what's been happening:
    I. I take the .cfg file, right click on it, go to general and rename it to .txt file.
    II. My computer says "Cool."
III. I go back to it in the Sega\Med. 2 TW folder and it's a .cfg.txt file or it's stored as a .txt file but my computer reads it as a configuration file or my computer says "wrong file and pathname"!

Please help, somebody! I never had this issue with Windows XP.

    Thank you kindly, hellas1

I wouldn't say so, he's not asking for modding help but rather help changing a file type, for which the basement is the right place.

As for the actual problem, I have no idea.

Your problem is that you don't want your config as a text file (as it won't work).

Just right click > open with > notepad (check the box for 'always open with'); it's plain text and can be read in .cfg form

For future reference, Windows will not show you a file's actual extension by default, for the most part. You may need to specifically dig up and enable that setting to change files' extensions, which Windows assumes you're too stupid to do properly. (Of course, if it had half a brain, it would figure out that the file is a text file and make Notepad edit it by default anyway, as for instance Nautilus does on Linux.)

    Hi Simetrical,

I did what Sapi told me to do but look what happened:

I rt. clicked on the file

I went to properties and I used notepad to open the file with but I couldn't use "use this program to always open this file" option, it was greyed out!

When doing so, I got an error message stating:
"C:\blah\MTW2\med.pref.cfg cannot be saved, please check the pathname and file" (sorry, I can't remember the exact words but this IS what happened).

WHY did this occur? Did I not go about it the right way?

    Anyone? hellas1

BTW, I did save the imperial campaign\descr_ something file though to MY DOCUMENTS and that's how I got it to work.

In VISTA and WINDOWS 7, the correct .cfg file is in Users\{your name}\AppDate\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\medieval.preferences.cfg. This is the one you must change.

    ^Pay attention to this line.

And u need administrative rights to save changes and u need to make sure under properties that the file is not set to read only type other wise u can't save changes on it.
