Default Regarding opening the medievalpref.cfg to unlock all factions with Vista

    Hi all,

I've now got a Vista machine and every single time I try to change the
medieval.preferences.cfg file to a .txt file it doesn't work!

I want to be able just to unlock all my factions for the grand campaign.

Can you please help me with changing this file AND saving the changes?

Thank you kindly, hellas1- I never had this problem w/Win XP.

You don't need to change the extension, just use any text editor to open the file then save it with the same name/extension.

It could be in XP you had the extension .cfg tied to a text editor already, whereas in a new install of vista it isn't. Simple way to fix it: Right click the cfg file, go to open with -> choose default program. Choose which text editor you use, and make sure the box is checked "Always use the selected program to open this knid of file"

    Hi StrikeQ,

    Thanks for your help.

Before I do this, Are you sure?

    I don't save the file?

I'm sorry sir, but I HATE reinstalling this game, over and over.

    I sincerely thank you, hellas1

You do save the file after editing it, but you do not need to change it to a text file. (just click save, instead of save as)

medieval.preferences.cfg is not the file you use to make all factions playable. Go into your Medieval directory, and go into data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and open descr_strat.txt

    You should see this:
    Code:
    campaign imperial_campaign
    playable
        england
        france
        hre
        spain
        venice
        sicily
        milan
        scotland
        byzantium
        russia
        moors
        turks
        egypt
        denmark
        portugal
        poland
        hungary
    end
    unlockable
        sicily
        milan
        scotland
        byzantium
        russia
        moors
        turks
        egypt
        denmark
        portugal
        poland
        hungary

    end
    nonplayable
        papal_states
        aztecs
        mongols
        timurids
        slave
    end
Basically just copy all the ones from 'end unlockable' into 'playable, so it looks like this:
    Code:
    campaign imperial_campaign
    playable
        england
        france
        hre
        spain
        venice
        sicily
        milan
        scotland
        byzantium
        russia
        moors
        turks
        egypt
        denmark
        portugal
        poland
        hungary
    end
    unlockable

    end
    nonplayable
        papal_states
        aztecs
        mongols
        timurids
        slave
    end
Very quick and painless, and there you go!

    Hey Scorch,

Thanks for setting me straigt man!

BTW, what kind of advice AM I getting on these forum? (I mean it nicely)

There's a place here in this forumthat talks about messing with the preferences.cfg file and in Vista NONE of the stuff told to me or on a number of places in this huge forum work.

    THANK YOU! hellas1
Later brother......BTW, I just did what you told me but Vista said that it was a "wrong file and pathname"?
It simply doesn't allow me to save it to the folder itself, so I saved to My Documents.
What Da' Heck is up with Vista? I've enabled this program to be run as administrator too.

Right click on the txt file and uncheck read-only and apply. Then config again and apply.

    Actually Scorch if you add:

    [misc]
    unlock_campaign = true

Then it does the same thing, and you dont have to worry about copy/paste errors.
