    Default Mountain battles are nightmares.

Even defending its rough. Since most of my armies have mass archers, in theory it would be easy. But I guess the height difference is too great so most of my arrows miss for some reason.

The only consolation is that the enemy is exhausted by the time they reach the top making rout real quick against my spearmen(even though my spearmen are on the virge of routing themselves)

And for some reason there are invisible barriers preventing me from positioning my men in a wall of infantry.

I guess you're talking about mountains like around Jerusalem and stuff (the high mountains). They're tough to defend indeed with archer armies. Like you said before all the archers seem to miss 90% of their arrows. It's really easy to defend them when using heavy cav. The enemy will be completely exhausted and one charge from a unit higher then they are will almost rout every unit.

Yea the really high mountains. But it is funny to see the enemy charge into my spearmen and instantly rout.

There is an advantage, they don't have to run too far to find the hills

I noticed on the battle map with high mountains that there are a lot more places where you can't move and/or place units than in R:TW. It makes it really complicated to attack some armies who are stationed on mountains, because you have to move all the way around the map to reach them.

Dom: "Yeah, right. When's the last time the wind said "Hostiles!" to you?"

Mountain battles are a godsend if you're defending. Most likely, you'll find a nice high spot to defend from while having only one or two paths the AI can attack you from.

Combine Sipahi footlancers with Ottoman Infantry defending on a mountain top, closing off all paths to the top with spears, and raining constant death from a high point with archers. Then imagine fighting off a total of 5 Mongol armies at once like this. Greatest advantage ever, perhaps moreso than defending in a siege.

Do you still get atk and def bonuses for having the higher ground or is it just morale?

Not sure, as Dismounted Sipahis have great attack and defense to begin with.

Maybe it's a morale thing, since not once did I have a unit of Sipahis break, even when facing down 3 units of Mongol Heavy Lancers and their 10-star 10-dread general.

Once i destroyed half the enemy army with a single unit of peasant archers from a high mountain. Elevated position makes a missile unit far greater

Just besiege their city and let them attack you. Why chase them in insane mountains when they can be forced to come to you?

I had an english army positioned in these high mountains and the only path towards it was up this slope which wasn't really steep. My archers were placed high above and thus had a perfect shot to rain arrows down on the enemy.

    They were completely decimated.

As the defender in these battles, the enemy pretty much exhausts themselves since they have to haul their butts up the mountains so it's a natural bonus for you. When they are tired, their morale is lower.

Those fights can be annoying if attacking though, but sometimes mountians make it impossible to move, there is no way up, and those battles are the annoying for the attackers if you are the attacker, and defenders if you havent got time limit on.

Tough once near jerusalem I got a narrow path leading up the mountian and i was outnumbered 4:1 but due to this path my longbowmen and cannons ripped right through them, though it wasn't easy catching their cavalry archers due to this

    Complaining about defending a mountain?

Those battles you can form up and just hit 6x, automatic victory unless your army is total crap.

I've had great battles on those insane mountains with javelin-armed troops. Those fellas in your front lines backed by heavier line infantry in the senc d rank is a great combat force for the higher mountains.

I like ot allow the enemy to get on a more level surface myself. This allows the archers and crossbowmen easy access to the tired enemy and allows my cav to flank without too much loss. The javlinmen slaughter the enemy as they move forward, the archaers/crossboowmen pick off the rear ranks as the come up the slope as it levels off, and the cav and heavier infantry do what they do best.

Oh mountain battles are the best.

I'm sure that high ground gives a bonus to all units, archers/foot, plus how the enemy with be completly tired makes 'em easier to kill.

I've had bodyguard's units get decimated by light spearmen at the tip top of mountains.

I hate attacking enemy forces on hills/mountains. I don't know, it's just a pain in the ass marching up. Defending is a different story.
