Default What you all think of this TV?

    Samsung 56" DLP HDTV

    · 720p (1280 x 720) (a reviewer said it was actually 1080p)
    · NTSC/ATSC/QAM
    · Widescreen aspect (16:9)
    · 2500:1 contrast ratio

    $1599

It has 2 composite inputs, 2 S-video inputs, 2 component video inputs, 2 HDMI inputs.

Was gonna put it on this stand so I could put my 360, DVD player and DVR box under it.

    What do you think?

Looks good, but this topic has the answers, it has some quite mind-baffling stuff, beware.

For such as big screen it has really poor resolution, if your going to get a large screen you need one that can display up to and including 1900 x 1200 (1080p). The review probably means it can handle incoming 1080p signals, were the picture is then scaled down to a resolution (in this case 1280 x 720) to what the TV can actually display.

Bottom line is I would avoid it.

Considering my price range is $1500, do you have a better suggestion mate?

would you consider sacrificing screen size for quality? as in would you get one that is a couple (or more) inches smaller if it meant it didnt have the issues freddy has pointed out?

i dont know the US market but i'm guessing you might get improved quality in the same price range if you are prepared to go for something slightly smaller (bareing in mind its still bloody massive)

Yeah, I would take anything from 42" to 56". I mean, I would like a big TV but I understand the resolution issue.

    How about this one guys?

    Samsung 40" LCD HDTV

(Yes, I am kind of looking at a Samsung because I love how they look and they're generally high quality)

    • 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution
    • NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuners
    • Widescreen (16:9) • 10,000:1 contrast ratio
    • 3 HDMI inputs
    • 2 component inputs
    • 1 PC input

Now that's a good TV. We just bought a Samsung 46 inch LCD TV 2 months ago, it's built like a beast, and lots of options to fine tune. People say Sony have the best picture quality, but personally I don't see any difference.

And when choosing between size and resolution, I would go with resolution.

    That looks amazing.
    I want it.

Does anyone know of any British websites selling this model (or something very close)

I'm not going to give any advice about price for model value, but what I will say is try and see the TV so you can personally check the picture quality yourself before buying. Buying off the net is all well and good but there's nothing like seeing it yourself.

Thanks man! Hey, I haven't seen you here in a long time, how's it been going? Anyways, I should go for the 40" or at least a TV with a good resolution for its size? Cool. Plus it'd look less weird on a stand than a 56" DLP mammoth.

    Right here:

    Samsung 56" 1080P DLP HDTV

    4,000:1 contrast ratio
    widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio
    1920 x 1080 pixels (1080P)

    Price: $1,588.88

And in case you are wondering, as far as I can tell, the reason these are so cheap is because this particular model was discontinued when they brought out another one this year. But all the reviews I have seen have been good, and I have personally seen this TV in action, and it looks fantastic.

Here's a place you can get it even cheaper, but I don't know much about the retailer

the usual retailers in the UK like currys dixons etc have websites, i dont know if they do this model but they are big companies so its a good bet. wont be that damn cheap in the UK though.

If you go Samsunt I'd go for one of the new X8 series (where X stands for R, M and whatever there are). Rather go for Full HD than size, as Freddy (indirectly) said, you'll just get a messy pic.

Just go look at both before you decide. A 40" LCD is going to look a lot better than the larger DLP. Bring a movie you have watched a few times and make them hook up a dvd player if they want your business.
