    Default Issues

Hey, i finally got my new PC up and running. But now it appears i have OS problems. I installed Vista 64bit Home premium, that went well. Then it came to installing drivers when some problems arised. When i try to install games, i only tried RTW and METW 2, the OS locks up it locks up as soon as i try to access the CD, or when it's installing, forcing me to reboot, and when trying to restart, i will get a Grey screen after the loading bar completes for vista(sometimes i will have to reboot several times). Sometimes it would lock up and make a funny noise for a few seconds. Last part happened on my old PC sometimes, i thought it was due to age, and the damaged CPU.

Similar problem when i tried to update my Video card drivers, except the screen would go black half way through installing forcing me to reboot again. After the tenth time of rebooting using "last working configuration" i finally get back into the OS again.

All motherboard drivers installed fine. Video card refused. I tried both the Nvidia drivers and Leadteks drivers. Both threw a ****.

    These are my specs:

    CPU: AMD X2 6000+
    RAM: 2 gig corsair 800MHZ
    VC: GTS 8800 Leadtek
    Motherboard: GA-M57SLI-S4

I heard Vista had issues with the Leadtek GTS 8800, or just that range in general.

    Anyway, please help.

    Thanks.

As far as I've heard, 64-bit is not a good idea from a driver-compatibility standpoint at present.

So it appears i've shot myself in the foot.

What about XP 64 bit? Or does it have driver issues aswell?

Same deal. Why do you want to use 64-bit? 32-bit OSes can work just as well with 64-bit processors. 64-bit doesn't have nearly enough advantages to outweigh its disadvantages yet.

I know. Just for the sake of having it really

I'll probably just use XP again. Although it's running abit more stable now, and booting properly after i installed some updates.

Hmm, it seems far more stable now, and reboots properly. I've narrowed down the problem to the DVD drive. It crashes as soon as it reads the CD/DVD. Makes a load ""burrr noise, then promptly hangs, forcing me to reboot. Of course vista is at fault. Googling now to see what i can find.

I had similar issues and narrowed it down to faulty DVD drive, twice. My case it was anytime a DVD/CD was in the drive. As soon as I took it out everything was fine. I'm on my third drive, hopefully it will last more than a couple months.

I think it was my old IDE HDD. I removed it, and the problem went away, also went back to XP.

Everythings smooth except for strange crash that happened once, which i think is the result of a heat spot on the CPU.

I suggest you don't toss your 64 Bit Systems yet, Micro$oft Is not making anymore 32 Bit. And when Micro$oft Talks, All other companies listen.

Then we'll all upgrade to Vista's 64-bit-only successor (if we use Windows rather than Linux or Mac or whatever). Until then, it's unstable and not well supported and should be avoided for desktops.

XP x64 is NOT unstable. Yeah, there are driver limitations that may cause problems for peripheral junkies (limited selection of webcams, some printers working only with curious spooler systems..) This does not make it 'unstable'.
I've run XP x64 for just over a year, and it never has any problems - it is more stable than 32bit XP was (I preferred Win2k anyway..).

If you do anything serious on your machine, such as 3D work, video editing or similar a wholeheartedly recommend x64. You can use buckets of RAM and 64 bit rendering engines. There is even 64 bit versions of Maya and other programs.. All in all it is much faster, therefore more productive than a 32bit system could hope to be!

If you collect things to plug into your PC, or if the most intensive tasks you put your machine through is play games, then stick to 32 bit. If you do anything real on it, then 64 bit will make a positive difference.

Fine, fine, not "unstable". "Not ready for average consumers to use." 64-bit may be useful if you do heavy graphical work, but benchmarks I've been linked to in the past cast it as doubtful at this stage. I would be interested in any evidence that it's a significant performance boost for any desktop application at this point, barring the mere fact of being able to utilize more than about 2 GB of RAM (which very few programs can use). With no really clear benefit, the poorer driver and application support aren't worth it.

Well it's all good now, had some issues with it not booting, reset the bios battery starting working again. I also replaced the thermal paste, which i didn't do the first time, after i had to remove the CPU from the board.

It's booting up fine, and has only crashed once, whilst playing HL2, which it think was more the games fault if anything, as it crashed the same area before.

CPU is running nice and cool, around 43/45 degrees whilst under intense loads.

So i'm happy. I got 38000 marks in 3d mark 2001(even though it;s really more CPU intensive. And i'll do the latter versions soon. Anyone else got any other bench marking programmes?

Everything is nice and shinny. And all happy.
