Default Question about Triari and Italian spearmen

Hey, I just downloaded and installed RTR6 Gold, then I found RTRPTE so I downloaded and installed it. Then I found the mod switch version, so after several hours of reinstalling the game over and over I started it up as the Romans, striving for a bit of historical accuracy. Mostly as close to as it as I can come with out getting myself obliterated.

After my first battle, taking the closest roman rebel city, the top one in southern Italy. I was left wondering about the Italian spearmen and Triari.

I remembered losing a battle of Triari against barbarian peasants because of the spear vs swords factors, do those still apply? Would my Triari get massacred by a sword unit or could they at least hold their own defensively, if not, dominate the enemy.

And I wondered it the Italian spearmen Are effective against calvary, It does not state it on their card but I was wondering if there is any bonus that spearmen/Triari get vs calvary, and if not, what's a good Roman unit to defend against calvary.

I can't give you an answer to the first question, but I am positive about the second one - my gaulish warbands did fine against heavy cavary units, just make sure they don't perform a charge on you which will cause massive casualties.

Triarii will defend OK against swordsmen but won't kill them any time soon. Just make sure they are supported on their flanks by hastati or principe units who can then flank the enemy.

I believe all spearmen get the bonus against cavalry, even though it isn't explicitly stated on their cards.

I agree to you......actually one must use the triarii at the flank to defend the infantry from cavalry charges

All spearmen have a bonus against cavalry...but they must be supported by other infantry either in their flanks or rear, since spearmen can be surrounded by horsemen and will ultimately be at a disadvantage. Spearmen are responsible for holding cavalry at bay. Not specifically wiping them out.

I would suggest using Italian Spearmen....since Triari is at a disadvantage in terms of number. But both units are overall good units for defense against Cavalry shock charges. Spearmen can withstand the charges, whereas other infantry units cannot. I believe that is the only differential aspect between spearmen and normal infantry.

Italian spearmen have a good attck factor and can finish cavalry faster....triarii have a better defence factor and can hold them longer but now finish them faster......u r right Mr_Ace.....having both at the flanks will help in battles....
