I think the recommended amount is 1GB, but lot's of people reckon 2GB is the only way to go.
There is probably some way of knowing exactly what type of RAM you have without opeing the case if you have a warranty on it. If not, just pop it open, and have a squiz.

What's the main difference of 1gb of DDR v 1gb of DDR2 RAM (apart from working on newer mobos)?

DDR2 RAM runs at a higher speed of mhz, meaning the data gets to the processor faster. DDR is only sold at 400mhz maximum, whilst DDR2 can go up to 800mhz. I think DDR3 is 1066mhz.
So loading times and such like will decrease with the new memory?

In theory, yes. It also depends on the rate which the hard drive can transfer the data to the motherboard, how fast the motherboard can transfer the data to the processor, and have the CPU calculate effects etc.
Basically this means a PC is as strong as it's weakest component, in theory.
According to wikipedia, DDR2 does go up to 1066mhz, but that DDR3 also goes as low as 800mhz.
Yes, my Asus P5k dELUXE (Sorry, caps off) can go to "native 1066" and even "native 1333"!
Though officially it's only 800..
Am I right in thinking the speed of the motherboard fsb has to be a multiple of the ram speed to get best performance? So that 667mhz ddr2 would actually perform better than 800mhz in a motherboard with 1333 fsb.![]()
