    Default So I accepted Orthodoxy

Yesterday, in the Church of the Saint and Faithful Dukes Boris and Gleb I was baptized and received the Eucharist. I made this thread to thank all those on TWC who guided me in choosing the Orthodox Church and ask of you for some advice on everyday life (meaning where to keep the icons, how, where and under what conditions to pray and/or cross myself as well as anything else that one would do as a Christian) that I, not having grown up in a Christian family, would not know.

I'm sure your God isn't going to care where you store your idolotries.

Ferrets, your understanding and support for Russki in his life's search are a sight to behold.

Support does not mean apathetically prodding somebody down a course you consider bizarrely wrong.

Well I take it Russki has found something he finds meaningful and important in his life; something which can only make him a better person. So why the need to demean something as sacred as where a man's heart lies?

Well, I support Russki in his choice. Good luck to him in his new faith.

Whether or not it makes him a better person depends entirely on your personal rating system of humanity.

I think anyone's "personal rating system of humanity" would provide that you are not being a very good person. Russki is new to the Christian faith and he is asking for guidance, not some [removed - Shaun] to mock his beliefs. If you don't believe in God thats fine, each to their own. But why do you insist on insulting people of faith whenever you can? I certainly don't see too many Christians hunting down atheists so that they can tell them their going to hell.

Welcome to the Church brother, many years.
Place your icons in one corner of the room where you intend to pray. You should be able to buy a small prayerbook at your local church. In prayerbook you will find prayers for morning when you get up and evening prayers before you go to sleep. Stand before icons, cross yourself and start reading the prayers. At the end of prayers cross yourself again and make a bow in front of the icons touching the floor with your right hand. Most important rule when praying is to concentrate on words you are reading. If your mind is wandering and thinking about something esle you will not have any benefit from that prayer. During the day try to pray Jesus prayer "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on me sinner". Repeat as many times as you can with care. You don't have to say it out loud.

Ferret: even if you don't believe religion will better me in any way spiritually, I myself think it would do wonders for my behavior at the very least, as I've tried to keep as moral as possible.
And as for considering my course bizarrely wrong: if you want to convert me to whatever the hell it is you're preaching (I'm guessing militant atheism), then try to refrain from insults. At the very least, it's not an effective tactic.

Snobbish agnosticism, actually, and if you intend to get on your high horse and tell me not to insult you (where, exactly, I cannot fathom) you may not wish to insult my intelligence in your very first reply to me.

Ok, Ferrets, I think the people in this thread and Russki himself would appreciate it if you stopped posting barely veiled insults and trying to provoke other members.

In this thread I've been called unintelligent and a 'scumbag' and you're going to have a go at me? Fine.

Congratulations .The Orthodox Church is the oldest and most genuine .
In my oppinion everyday life and what you do as a rule is not important .Important is what you are .
To make the sign of the cross from time to time is however necessary .I do it before going to sleep . And whenever I need to comfort myself .
I think you mustn't expect any advice from us .There are books on these issues ,mainly written by monks of cource . You 'll soon find that here to distinguish from the other denominations monks are responsible for everything .And indeed the best books on that are from them .
"Philocalia" or "Добротолюбие" ( from св.Паисий Величковски ) is the best to have on morals and spiritual life .

I'm no member of the Orthodox Church, but might I recommend against the bathroom? It could get a little awkward.

Other than that, why don't you ask your new priest? Could be a good way to break the ice on the Church going front.
