could it have crashed cuz I had crap load of units as mercenaries in my army? Maybe I expanded too fast and my comp couldn't handle it?

Using any mods, custom skins? I have seen memory errors when there were problems in the battle_models.modeldb.

no custom skin or anything. My comp is pretty old. 1.70GhZ pentium4, 1.50g ram and a ATI 9800 one-hit-wonder. Though my suspicions are cuz my comp couldn't handle such quick expansion and increased troops on map.

Minimum specs for the game is 1.8ghz CPU though, but I don't think that's the issue here. My bet would be your graphics card. the 9800 cards are 4+ years old now. Could also be that you got faulty ram.
