Woe is me, the mod will not work.

So, I've played RTW for a while and completed it, I do enjoy it, so I thought I'd try this mod.

The game (version 1.5) would not work with the 1.5 version of RTR, it would not even start, so I install 'Barbarian Invasion' and update that to 1.6.

Yay, the game starts, but alas, after I choose a faction and press to play, it collapses into a black square covering about 1/3 of my screen and then I get a windows error apologizing for having to turn it off.

What do I do now?

Secondly, you don`t install BI after the mod. You have to install that before the mod. I would recommend to uninstall and reinstall RTW and Bi(note: BI is not needed to play RTR; RTW v1.5 is enough, but installing BI doesn`t hurt either). Then install RTR. There is a detailed guide in my sig on installing these so that RTR will work. The version for RTW v1.5 is RTR Platinum Edition or RTRPE in short.

I am sorry if I did not explain my position well enough.

I uninstalled Rome total war from my PC. I installed a fresh version of Rome total war on my PC, then I updated this fresh install to version 1.5

Then I installed Barbarian Invasion, and proceeded to update Barbarian Invasion to version 1.6

I download Rome total realism 1.9 platinum and install it. I start the game, I choose a faction and press play. The computer starts to run its calculations but before I see the familiar loading screen the game crashes.

I get a windows error, as in 'blah blah had to close the application. Would you like to report?", a standard message.

Between the game and the patch v1.5 have you installed the RTW patch v1.3 corresponding to your game language version? You did an number of unnecessary steps there. If you have RTW that is v1.0 and BI that is v1.4 you should install like so:
1. RTW v1.0
2. BI v1.4 which will also upgrade your RTW to v1.3
3. BI patch v1.6 which will also upgrade your RTW to v1.5

Theoretically they way you do it could have worked, but you did it in a wrong order. I`m not sure what files overwrote which.

Other then that, have you deleted the map.rwm files? There is a note to that in my guide. Basically, if you don`t delete them, right before entering a campaign or a custom battle the game will crush.

Yap as always with installation problems. Start with a clean copy so the source of the fault is locateable.
Start with a clean vanilla (RTW V1.0)
Install BI
Patch to 1.6
Install latest platinum.
always launch the game after each step. This way it is easy to isolate a problem.

Uh, is there some bug with Pontus? When I'm playing Pontus it works perfectly for about 30 turns and then I get the same error as when I hadn't reset the campaign map.

What's the deal? I really enjoyed playing as Pontus

Yes, exactly this.

Do you have the revolt hotfix installed? If not try to install that. It`s pinned in the RTR Platinum sub-forum. It should be saved game compatible form what people report, but it would be wise to backup the files first just to be sure.
