thunder storms clean up radiation.

a while ago i watch a TV program about thunderstorms and lighning and the differetn type of lightning tht occurs , it also stated that thunderstorms which happen around the earth actuly cleans up all the radiation in space where all of our satalites are orbiting saying tht without thunderstorms it would be impossible for satalites to be used and i was wondering what your view of this is , i'll try and find the video on youtube for you

P.S it also said something about ball lightning could someone explains this to me?
