Default Special things to make vanilla more interesting...

I've been trying some things out to create a more enjoyable game, as I was boring my assyrian hoplite off... I've done 2 things that make for a MUCH more enjoyable campaign so far...

    - take a faction to the other side of the world.

As my Scythian faction leader was tired of snow and wanted to taste the sweet warm weather of Iberia, I grouped together all my armies, kept 1 city(to avoid losing the game) and marched towards Carthago Nova. It took me 15turns to get there, I had the hardest time getting my economy back up, I was fighting off decently developped opponents from all fronts. It was extremely entertaining. Can be done with a lot of factions, tho I don't advice taking Gaul or Hispania to Parthian territory, that would make for a very hard game...

    - cancel the roman superfaction thing

I started with the scipii, had to leave my Italian city to the Brutii and focused on Sicilia. Brutii are currently at war with the Julii and Senate, they aren't expanding at all, so the other civ have a chance to build up and actually stand a chance against the romans until 1 faction becomes superior...

    Anyone who has more ideas?

    Here are some:
    1) Play online
    2) Use Spain online and see how many games you can win out of 20
    3) write battle reports of your battles

That idea was done with someone, I saw he done it last year or the year before, he took numidia to ireland.

If you play barbarian invasion you could try to get as many pagans in your empire then try to convert it all to christiananity.

Try and take a historical route as you expand or one you believe that faction may of taken if they were trying to forge an empire.

Or do a AAR for a campaign you are doing

Yea I've done that twice, I had fun taking parthia to italy, I "sacked" (or should I say exterminate and let the settlement rebel) my way to italy. I've also took my carthage empire to Greece, the greeks put on a good fight especialy sparta.. sheesh. macedon was owned rather quick, I was able to break a lot of phalanxes with my elephants.

Some examples of things ive done.

    1) Give your faction leader a mission. One he must complete before he dies.

This puts a time limit on reaching your objective and makes it important not to loose him in battle or to assassins or to plague.

    2) Impose a limit on certain troop types. No beserkers, no peasants, no more than one general or cavalry unit per stack. Those sorts of things.

    3) Keep your capital where you start it. Causes 'distance to capital' penalties. Force it to grow to its maximum size as befits the capital of your mighty empire.

    4) Defend a certain region. Can you play 200+ years without expanding?

    - Play your character like their traits.
    - Use realistic armies
    - Fight with less of an army against heavier foes so you have 1:5 odds
    - Use your faction leader to lead your grand campaign himself.

-Defend your region and never expand on VH/VH mode.
-Build everything in all of your cities before you expand.
    -Blockade every port.
-Leave you homeland and live in islands only.

    Those should be challenging.

Play horde game conquer a city and abandon it the same turn, also if you want more difficult battles conquer a city and destroy all temples and put very high taxes, wait one or two turns and you are thrown out of the city.
Now you have a new place to conquer.

-expand historically as romans(greatly slows down development, IE, start Punic wars on exact dates, try to end them around the same or once you have what the Romans gained historically, get peace)
