Default Best way to beat carthage played by a human?

I am playing a hotseat game, and another player is playing carthage, I am rome. I'm not losing... but i'm not winning. How can I really beat him? He has control of the seas, and most of my ports blockaded. Should I expand into gaul? Or should I keep it a one front war?

Take his sicilian holdings as soon as possible, as that will cut off some of his Naval production capabilities. Next, take Jenuensis, or Genoa, I forget the name, and build a ship there. That'll give you a safe route of transportation to Corsica and Sardinia. The trip takes one turn, so you'll be safe. Next, go for Iberia, as that will cut him off from mining revenue, and then finally attack Africa.

    Good luck, Roma Victor!

    to my opinion

u should secure north africa first, as Hanno the great provided strong continental base to Carthage, OR

build an army and install ourself in england , may be a solution...no !

It's worse than what you guys think...

    Here's a ss:

As you can see he has reghuim or whatever, and now he is going for croton. A very important note: We are not playing with autoresolve, we CAN fight each other armies... and ofcourse the ai sucks.

If I could move a full army into croton I would have him blocked, cause he would not want to besiege it, cause of the fact I could just sally out and destroy his army on my next turn.... anyway, I cant reach croton in time. I can only build a fort in between the mountains there.

So, how can I make my ai better than his?

Just a quick question, how are you playing hotseat where you can fight the battles?

Only dream I ever have. Is it the surface of the Sun?
Everytime I shut my eyes, it's always the same.

You definitley need to focus all of your energies on Rhegium and Sicily. There's no two ways about it, that is clearly his route of invasion. If you can take Sicily, you'll significantly weaken him, and strengthen yourself in the process.

Btw, why does it show you as the Greek cities?

    EDIT

looks like you got one of those rare Greek dominations on your hands. Good luck with stack upon stack of elite hoplites pushing into Italia.

He only dominates cause I HELPED him... not with my troops but by me telling him what to build, etc.

My legionaires could take em though... in fact I think im gonna go play a custom battle and test some stuff....

I would just hold him at bay on land and build a single great fleet in the adriatic. You only need ONE that can beat any of his one on one, probably 5-8 ships strong. Have it break blockades every turn, but make sure at the END of turns it is INSIDE a port so it is defended from attack. When your ports are relieved you should have some more money for troops, then add in some seige equipment so you can attack and take a town on the same turn, taking advantage of the weak AI. From there on, town hop all over Sicily. Do it quickly as you can't beat him in endurance: he's got more cities = more population = he can replace troops more easily.

One added thing, if you are running low on population, take an army down and enslave Syracuse, that place usually has about 15K people.

So, A small fleet of my best ships, the ones with the plank thing, could get his navy? He has a pretty big navy... with two stars too. As for attacking syracus... another player is greece... and he has a whole army of spartans in sparta not doing a thing..... Oh, and, I know this may sound like a dumb question, but when you put troops in your ships, does that make the ships better in any way? The corvus quinquirmes... with the planks... the romans fought them on their boats...so maybe you guys modded it to give a bigger advantage to the romans?

Alright friend, heres what u need to do if u want to defeat the carthaginians (if thats ur goal,if not im confused, but still)
Attack him before he attacs you.Sacrifice croton and if needed tarentum, dont wory, youle take em back.Create a few forts in that areas between those two and paestum-corfinium filled each with one peasnt unit to slow them down. Then take some units from capua, roma and ancona, and ofcourse train some more but keep in mind youre north border.Put the army on ur fleet (wherever it is) and sent it to lilybaeum.Fortify youreself and train more units (if youre attacked while siege, withdraw and force them to open field) Than move to messana end eventualy regnum.Take back youre cityes and train as much men as possible. Then take corsica and sardinia.Use the tactic preemptive strike (sorry for speling) which means you attack him just before he is ready to attack you. When in battle hide in forests as much as posible and apply the most pressure where the enemy is most vulnerable, use cavalry and artilery to make them vulnerable, and always have archers. When in siege, use only onagers and siege towers (3-4) and send everyone on the walls. If u do this you will win.Just remember u dont need a big fleet to transport men when youre that close, and always put the remeining fleet in available ports, and ofcourse u need to prefer refiling a squad rather then making a new cause the experience.

PS:Are u playing on one PC or u and youre oponent each play on theyre own,i realy gotta know, thanks!!

It is on the same pc.... and I think you guys dont get the navy situation.... I have no navy, he has a lot, spread out everywhere.

Any build up of troops will have to travel pretty far... so far that he will be able to sink the ships on his next turn (he'll know where they are)... and any time I use to build up a navy.... thats money I would have need to defend my cities....

Ill post a new ss soon.

That's the key to what I said. He may have alot of Ships, but they are SPLIT UP into several groups. I was suggesting making all the ships you build into 1 BIG group so that he has to make a choice: A) let your navy slowely pick off his ships one by one, or B) consolidate all his ships into a large navy, which will be protecting them but not allowing him to blockade more than one port at a time. I have found that in this game the rule of land combat and sea combat is opposite: It is easier to fight an offensive campaign on land but it is easier to fight a defensive sea campaign. Use that to your advantage. As for the elephants.... wise use of Skirmishers should put em down pretty quick.

Also notice that Aleria and Cearalis (Corsica and sardinia) have no walls and few troops. If you can move some troops to each of those islands quickly he wil lose them easily.
