The papal states are never defeated? i only have the mongols and egyptians left, but theyre still on the faction list... not even navy whatsoever...

That's interesting...I've heard stories of catholic factions donating land to relocate the papal states but to have only 2 Muslim factions left...maybe they really are immortal. Don't suppose they have an island somewhere?
not that i know about...
looking forward to say hello to him then![]()
Hehehe, does he get replaced as usual if he should...you know...have an accident while wandering?![]()
As egypt I tend to move into italy from the south and wipe out the papacy most games. The pope likes to wander around in Tunisia or Sardinia an last game I killed 9 and a new one was elected each time. Even without a country he still had his flag in the nation bar I believe - wansn't paying attention though so i can't be certain.
They are immortal![]()
In my current campaign as Spain I first moved the pope to Ajaccio (Corsica) and left him there in his castle, with one familiy member and two units of dismounted feudal knights, also made him my vassal. Then, as the most powerful among catholics I gradually took over the entire College of Cardinals and had no more problems with him other than having to gift him some florins here and there to keep him happy.
But I still didn't like him telling me what to do with my half-the-world empire (send a crusade there, train a priest here, bla, bla...) so after eliminating Scotland, the last of the catholic kingdoms, I let all my priests die. Now there are no more cardinals, the last pope has died a few turns ago, there was no election for a new one (the Pope tab says that the position is "currently vacant") and I took over Ajaccio, killed off his knights, got excommunicated for it and did I get rid of him? No! Even dead he mocks me and this time I can't even bribe him to reconcile me...![]()
I was playing as Milan and I wasn't paying attention to religion(it was my first campaign lol). Then all my generals and agents were getting burned for heresy, so I got pissed so I invaded Rome and conquered it in hopes of defeating papal states. Instead a new pope is elected and he sits outside of rome buying mercenaries trying to reconquer Rome. I killed the Pope like 5 times. New ones would be elected. The Pope still killed my generals for heresy so I learned from that campaign to make religion a top priority at least for catholic nations.
the same happened to me when i played the spanish, the pope was always bugging me and killing my generals. suppose he didnt like me being so agressive. playing a muslim faction eliminates the pope problem, but if every city that i take is not sacked and some population killed, it will revolt no matter how many troops i put in it.
In Regular, Milan did, and the hre took over the papl states, its just they get re-located in christan held domains sometimes
however in ss, it seems random being, or possibly a glitch, the papal got kicked off by venice, and the papals were re-located in the middleeast, least to say they didnt make alot of friends there.![]()

The pope is a pain in the ass! I hate religion (in real life and in game) and was very disappointed to learn that i couldn't kill the pope once i conquered rome, because he just keeps getting reelected... how stupid! If i control all of europe then i expect to have that choice of whether to keep the pope, or execute the annoying old fool!
I conquered Papal States once as HRE(to trigger victory)
Got excommunicated, next turn, an HRE-backed Pope was elected, I now have perfect relationships
Nothing like a political take-over and installing a puppet Pope![]()
Whoever gives nothing, has nothing. The greatest misfortune is not to be unloved, but not to love.

I conquered the Old World as the Turks. The pope kept respawning near Rome every turn after I killed him. I had created a special pope killing army for that. In the end (10+ dead popes) I got bored and let him watch Rome.![]()

Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.
Tosa will be missed.
I do not know how this happened but when I was playing as England for the first time i got excommunicated in the 13th century and then in the 14th century the pope called a crusade to recapture London![]()

The only way I found to handle the pope situation was to take Rome and then keep using the kill faction cheat against them but other then that I think the popes just keep popping up.
