    Default Best Soundtrack?

It's tough for me to say what's the best video-game/movie soundtrack out there.

I thought 300's soundtrack was just flat-out awe-inspiring. But I also thought that movies like Saving Private Ryan, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down and Gladiator had amazing soundtracks as well.

As I posted in this thread:

    In no specific order:

    Black hawk down
    Buena Vista social club
    Pi the movie
    Fight Club
Requiem for a dream <- I really love this one
    The thin red line
The good, the bad and the ugly
and although it's not exactly movie music (despite having been heavily used in Platoon):
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings, op.11

    to name a few

    Define a soundtrack?

I would imagine you are not including musicals and the like but just back round music? Or would things like American Graffiti count?

Either one is fine. However, I have not heard any songs from musicals that I would listen to off the screen.

    Hmm...a good soundtrack?

I'd have to agree with Last Spartan's 300 - that was an amazingly epic soundtrack. It's a great mix of classical styles and modern electronic and metal elements. Plus, the songs that appeared during the film matched what was happening on the screen perfectly (see Fever Dream during the 2nd day's fighting & Cursed by Beauty during the Oracle's scene..perfect).

Beyond that other more dramatic films like Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down all have really nice, epic, and solid sounding soundtracks. In fact, that song from the Gladiator soundtrack that plays during the ending scene where Maximus dies and is carried away by the other gladiators almost brought a tear to my eye the first time I saw the film.

I have not heard any songs from musicals that I would listen to off the screen.
What about Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas? Such a badass movie/musical.

Do you want it to be original pieces? Written for the movie or game? If not, I think Forest Gump would be hard to beat, and GTA: San Andreas has an incredible soundtrack for a video game.

I like to separate between Film Music and soundtrack, apparently no one else here does.

So the best soundtracks/Film music is obviously movies with music by Ennio Morricone, frankly no other film music composer is anywhere near the talent of Il Ennio. Examples of his brilliance:

    The Mission
    For a Few Dollars More
Once Upon a Time in the West
    Cinema Paradisio
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
    GEIR HASUND!

By the way, though my avatar might indicate so, I am not a citizen of Germany, though my ancestry have a branch in this great nation.

I'm not going to repeat what others have mentioned, so I'll mention the Hitman series instead. Excellent soundtracks for all the games, brings a sense of class to violent murder doesn't it?

Edit: Oh and the Halo theme tune is excellent, but there isn't really enough music in the game for me to consider it a soundtrack. Both the original and the Mjolnir remix are brilliant pieces, really gets the blood pumping.
