So, I just ordered Rome: Total War and the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack, but then I saw that Alexander one. Never heard of it and I couldn't find much info on it, so I ask: What is it, and is it worth buying?

recreate the conquest of the persian empire by alexander,
its not worth buying, most mods here are 10 times better than alexander one,
I have it and was very unimpressed by it. The map and units both seem very under par, compared to what the Creative Assembly did on RTW and BI. The game itself is very linear, and lacks much replayability.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the opinions.![]()
am i the only one who sort of enjoyed it lol? well it was alrite, quite fun but annoying amount of turns on the campaign i always felt rushed, also didnt put india on the campaign map (the game was suppost to be based on recreating alexanders campaign, and it didnt even let you fight india) i think the game was more based on the film that came out, than his actual life lol. By far the best feature of the game is the historical battles, they were fun and gave you some information before the battles.
Of course not, Lee. Alexander is an awesome expansion, but that's coming from a die-hard Macedonian fan. I even treated Alexander the Great's birthday like a holiday.
I never play it though since most online players use Rome: Total War (vanilla).

Dimitri The Hellene,
I think Roman Clone called me "Macedonian" in the sense that I'm a huge fan of the Macedon faction on Rome: Total War. As you can tell from my avatar, Alexander the Great is my hero and inspiration.
LOL hopefully none of my girlfriends will try to assassinate me
(+rep points for you)

There is no such thing and never was such a thing as the Macedonian race, only the Greek Kingdom of Macedon, the only Macedonians are from Northern Greece, like myself. Not the slavic nation of F.Y.R.O.M.
Sorry if i came off a bit rough, just really sensitive about the matter.
Also, this is off the subject, but..
Are there any patches I'll need to download?
Maybe. It depends on what version of the game you wind up getting. After you install both, start them, go to the Options screen, and you will see the version number in the upper right corner. The newest version for RTW is 1.5, and for BI 1.6.

Basically it's Barbarian Invasion divided by four and with the voice of Brian Blessed. Forget about it.
Off-topic: 30th post w00t!
The Alexander Expansion is propably only some half-finished thing. For example, the intro tells you that, once you are in Asia, you have to rely on local mercenaries because your homebase is to far away to provide you with reinforcements. But there are lots of cities down there that have all the facilities to retrain and raise your prime Mack' Phalanxes. So, some system of regional recruitment is desperatly needed to make this game a little more accurate.
Dacians, Skythians, Afghans and Kaukasians seem all to share the same units, even so more fitting models were already in RTW. Fighting Central European Barb' cavalry in the Hindukush is, at least, a little strange.
They didn't change the half-year turns. So, your Alexander is somewhat in his forties or fifties when he enters Babylon. A one-month turn would have been much more fitting.
Bahhh Alexander 's not woth buyng in my opinion...it sucks!
"Hoti to kratisto" - Alexander of Macedon
You will get much more fun from the RTW and BI that you have just ordered. They will keep you playing far longer than Alexander.
If you enjoy RTW and BI then Alexander is fine..if you can get it cheaply. As SubRosa said it has a linear campaign (and you can only play Macedon). This means you are not going to go back to play it often. I had some of the biggest battles of any campaigns on Alexander...quite memorable.

I liked it, if you find that you get bored of the campaign's on RTW and BI cus once you hve 15 -20 cities you are easily the best on map and its really all over then you will like the alexander campaign. Also the historical battles are really good fun and challenging. Finally you can pick it up off ebay for a few quid and LOTR mod is gunna be on alexander so if you are a fan of LOTR then its worth getting to play the mod (when its released...).
Its alright but its main problem is that there are no mods for it - I got bored of vanillia RTW quickly but there are plently of mods for it - there isnt a completed mod for alexander and it is unlikely that there will be.

I liked it, and I modded some of the aspects it brought into regular RTW. For instance, the Persia faction has alot of units that you can add into regular RTW to boost Pontus, parthia or Armenias troops.
But it wasn't the greatest. I mostly play custom battles on it. Never got that far in the campaign because, well, it was very odd. You could hire Companions as mercenaries down in Asia Minor and stuff like that.
