Default External soundcards - Any experiences?

I thinking of buying a new soundcard for my laptop, since I mess around with amateur music production. Im thinking of getting either a E-Mu 1616M or a Presonus Firebox. The Firebox is cheaper, but question is wether the extra money you pay for the possibilty to use the standalone DSP pcm-card that comes with the 1616 is worth spending. Does anyone have opinions or any other suggestions?

You're kidding right? I don't know about your laptop, but mine is equipped with a bunch of USB ports, a PCMCIA slot and a Firewire port - all excellent for connecting external stuff such as HD's, soundcards etc etc etc...
