    Default i need some help

    i have a dell inspirion 6400 laptop worked just fine until i had to reinstall windows now i managed to get everything to work except the sound i cant install the driver i searched the net and it seems that other people have this problem too but i could not find a solution . Stupid sigmatel drivers .... windows doesn't detect any sound equipment but when i ruin the dell diagnostics cd the sound works only when i fire up windows it doesn't work... I have windows xp professional service pack 2 . any help would be appreciated

    The rollback disk should have the necessary drivers on them, you shouldn't need to search for new ones. Look on the disk and you *should* find them.

    If not this sometimes happens to, rebooting fixes it on mine. (currently on a 6400 myself)

    If that doesn't work, look in device manager (right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager). Is the sound card listed there?

    no its not listed there . where is the sound card located? can i take it out and put it back maybe that will fix it i only see a media card the rest are codecs i saw this at sound and game controllers the sounds card should show on its own?

    The sound card is built into the motherboard, meaning you can't take it out. My suggestion was to unistall, reboot and let it recognise it again but if it's not recognised at all then it wouldn't help.

    Try this - Go to Start -> Run -> enter "dxdiag" without the speech marks. This should bring up the DirectX diagnostic tool. Navigate to sound. Is the sound device recognised here? You could also try running some of the diagnostic tools as well, but I'm not sure how effective they are.
