    Default max records exceeded

Whilst merging two mods (fourth age and lotr tw) I have started to put all the elves into fourth age from lotr tw. I have seen to it that all skeletons are valid for the base version and all references in model battle.txt exist. All initial error messages have been fixed. Now I get this:

max records exceeded from file ............. descr_model_battle.txt

Does anyone know what this means, I am exceeding a certain limit of characters of the file??????
Adding a single unit works fine! But the full amount (12 new units including captains and banners) doesn't work

    thanks

First off why did you post this in two different places?

Secondly It sounds like you went over the hardcoded unit limit you might have to take out some units

I think the hardcoded limit for models is something close to 250.

The hardcoded limit is 255 entries in DMB. I think the game counts the type entry of each one. You have to stay inside this limit or otherwise the game CTDs.
One thing that has some use is the mercenary_unit attribute from EDU. For example you can have a faction with two units(not more) with different textures but still using the same model and DMB entry. What you do is make two entries in EDU(the EDU has a hardcoded limit of 500 entries) and for one of them you add the mercenary_unit attribute. You give them both the faction ownership so they will be recruitable by that faction. Now, the regular EDU entry will use that faction`s texture from the DMB entry(for ex: carthage) and the one with mercenary_unit will use the merc texture for that entry. The limitation is that you won`t be able to add a mercenary unit that looks different while using the same DMB entry. Basically, you can only have a single entry for each faction(including slave) on the same DMB entry and a single one for the mercs. Not like the model, the texture and sprites are faction designated.

The descr_model_battle.txt has a ceiling to how many units can be put in there. I'm pretty sure it also includes banners. Try one at a time adding them until that error message comes up then you will know you have exceeded the limit.

Officers, standard bearers("banners") and mounts are all included in DMB along with the regular troops.
As an aside note. From what I understood, Alexander TW has a much higher limit. Over 300 IIRC. The 255 limit I noted above are for RTW v1.5/BI v1.6.

You can see how many of the entries are occupied in your DMB by doing a search for the word type. It only appears once in every entry and if there are no notes in the file`s text containing the word, you will get a correct number. You will see this way how many you have left.
