Around the coming December im going to buy a new gaming computer

Im looking to set up a computer to end all computers Heh

More precisely i want to buy an amazing computer that will last me at least 2 years and will play the best of the best games.

(always been a dream of mine)

    Any advice for setup?

Ultimate gaming computer? Quad core cpu, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a couple of 8800gtx's in Sli, 30 inch monitor, raptor hard drives in raid 0 and that diamond encrusted mouse.

If you only want it to last a couple of years then you won't need anything like this. A high-end core 2 duo, 2GB+ of normal RAM, 1 8800 series graphics card and a couple of reasonably fast hard drives. But, most inportantly, such a setup would mean you could buy a mouse that means you don't have to remortgage the house.

Oh I'm sure the basement collective can build you a computer that could stratify your needs? So are you thinking about overclocking?

I would imagine the computer is going to Intel based, probably built around a Quad core Yorkfield processors. For graphics Nvidia are launch the 9800 series in Q4 the rumours surrounding the 9800 is that it has over a billion transistors and is twice as fast the 8800 Ultra in games, and uses less power thanks to the switch to 65nm technology, so get two of them in SLI and a the Dell 30" LCD monitor to compliment it.

I'd think it better to buy a good computer just below top-notch and then upgrade sooner.

Because you can't get something that will always be the best.

And the top notch is always way overpriced just because people will get it.

really the best thing to do is to buy a great cpu and mobo with the rest just being okay components. That way as prices drop and new parts come out you can upgrade the solid base that you have.

All total I spent well over $2000 for my system in February, I could probably get it for $1500 or better now. There isn't really any need to buy the best components out there when they're at a premium in price unless money is no concern or it's for a video card. The video card is likely the most expensive component in a system these days and with the way games advance you almost have to get the best to enjoy high setting game-play for a reasonable amount of time. I paid $320 for my E6600 and now just bought an E4300 for $110 and am running it @ 3.6, which is the max I could get everyday stable with my E6600.

Also shop around, newegg gets the most advertising but zipzoomfly beats them in price with most components, plus you get free shipping.

Get a 1 kW power supply from PC Power & Cooling.

And the new Geforce 9 series card when it's out in SLI.

    Quadcore CPU.

    4 gigs of high-performance RAM.

Kick-ass sound card and sound system.

A few 1 TB hard drives and a couple WD Raptors.

    Etc.

    You know the deal.

All in all it would be best to revive this thread near December when you are ready to build. Like Freddie mentioned, the 9800's should be out by then, thats when I will finally be making a decision on upgrading my vid card.

I also agree with spartan_phalanx, don't be afraid to shop around, Newegg's prices are not as great as they used to be. If the price is a bit more at Newegg I will still go with them because of my buying history on record and their stellar customer service. Overall though most components I look at can be found cheaper elsewhere.

My ram is bad so im not to knowledgable about ram but, should I look for a specific ram type... and how does installing ram work?

which will be the best quad core cpu In december

gefore 9400 seems to be a given

Im embaressed to ask.. what is a raptor?

    ... not the dinosaur

My plan is to find all these basics then ask my neighbour for technicall advice for anything it might need or might help it.

(my neighbour is a well known computer genius around here... he can fix anything involving computers and most electronic devices.

All together what do you think the price of such a computer will end up being.

Apparently im looking in the price range of 2000 dollars and if need be maybe 2500

Canadian dollars, although not as bad as they used to not quite the same as american sadly..

Though soon they will be more.. mwahhahahahhaa

If your planning for 2500$ you might as well get an alienware.

    why would i need that?

    What the hell is that

Or is that a quadcore.... and is that the normal price for quadcore.

But what would the price of the specs i gave be.

Though right now im looking at alienware computer models.

the issue is im trying to mix a computer that will last me years and play games well for a long time while still not costing me 6000 dollars

Same problem here. I certainly don't want to pay more than €2000. I don't feel I need a 9800 graphics card or 4 GB either. Does anyone know a good computer model (making my own pc is excluded obviously). I thought something like this would do fine (in fact, I don't even need the 640MB version of the 8800 GTS, the 320MB isn't listed sadly and for obvious reasons). I'm not sure whether to choose a dual core or pay the extra 70 dollar for a quad core cpu.

    Code:
Operating system Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor E6700 (2.66GHz)
Memory FREE UPGRADE! 2GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM (2x1024)
Graphics Card 640MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS, 2 DVI, TV-Out
    Networking No Modem
Hard Drive 320GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
    Secondary CD/DVD Drive 16x max. DVD-ROM
Front Productivity Ports 15-in-1 memory card reader, 3 USB, 1394, audio
TV & Entertainment Experience No TV Tuner w/remote control
Sound Card Integrated 7.1 channel sound w/front audio ports
    Security Software Norton Internet Security(TM) 2007 - 15 Months
    Productivity Software Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
    Speakers HP stereo speakers
Keyboard and Mouse HP keyboard and HP scroller mouse
    your additional options:
Monitor HP 17-inch LCD Flat Panel Monitor
Note that I don't mind playing games on lower settings in the nearer future. My current pc, an HP I bought some five years ago is now starting to show its age (i.e. games like Bioshock are excluded even on the very lowest of settings), which is to me a sign I should buy a new computer. I hope the next pc I buy will preform about the same (obviously technology progresses faster and faster).

Its a super video tower that is used for things like real flight simulators. I doubt you can get better graphics than that will provide. An 8800 is garbage next to it.

We're going to need a really good "Get-Rich Quick!" Scheme if any of us are brave enough to buy it..

Why was that mentioned in the first place.... some of us are having trouble even getting 1,000$.

That quadro plex thing's not designed for gaming, it's designed for extreamly high resolution graphic/CAD work, these are the sort of things they use when creating films like Shrek and Monsters Inc. They support insane resolutions like 3840x3600, were talking maybe 4x 30 inch monitors running at max res lined up or stacked, however they suck balls at rendering moving images so they are no good for games.
