I like to put weak units in the center of my line to draw the enemy in to attack the center, then I have my flanks which I fortified with my strongest units sweep around while my cavalry goes to their very back and I encircle them. Here's a really simplified crappy photoshop of the tactic for you who can't read.

    Done editing, here's my input.

When two to four people rout at once, no matter how good the unit, most or all of the units will flee the battle. It's Hacking time! MUHAHAHAHA!

*I put the cute picture at the end to give you the result of the tactic .

    Kalos,

I dont know if you realize this, but that is the exact same strategy Hannibal used against the Romans at the Battle of Cannae.

It's also basic Tamerlan strategy, with weak center and strong wings and rear reserve

Usual atack plan of Tamerlan was always
    1. Luring some weak center unit to enemy to know his tricks and strategy
    2. Attack with center with possible routing
    3. Attack one wing
    4. Attack another wing
    5. Rear elite reserve finish it

    Maybe I am odd.

But I find the best 'defensive' strategy is massed ranks of Gendarmes 'running over those worthless peasants'

    You're very odd indeed.

I prefer massed ranks of Lancers instead.

Heavy cavalry charge, as simple as it gets, is still deadly effective. Even as a suicide charge before engaging or defending with infantry. If your horses don't rout them, they'll be too damaged and weak to put up a decent fight against foot troops afterwards.

This is, of course, a very expensive tactic. Horses don't come cheap.

Yea, basically the same stragedy, but with units with best defence in the middle, best attack as reserves/flanks. Cav the same tho. XD
