From Armatus:
Greeting members,
The following consists of two guides which elGreco and I have come up which allow you to play a Medieval II Total War - Grand Campaign with your friends over both LAN or the Internet. Or in other words utilize the Multiplayer hotseat feature of the game for more than one person.
First we will cover the campaign by Email as this requires no additional configuration aside from the initial game settings, other than that you have access to Email and have no problem sending and receiving attachments.
To play Multiplayer Campaign via Email:
I.Locate the installation folder of MII on your hard drive.
II. Locate the medieval2.preference and open it with notepad.
III. Add the following code:
[multiplayer]
playable = true
IV. Verify the values of the following settings.
[hotseat]
autoresolve_battles = 0
disable_console = 0
disable_papal_elections = 0
save_prefs = 1
update_ai_camera = 1
validate_diplomacy = 1
turns = false
scroll = false
Save the file and you are now configured to play. The factions are selected by the starting player. The starting player chooses their faction first. Once all factions are selected they start the game and begin their turn. Once completed with their turn they must upload or email their multiplayer campaign.sav(or whatever you named the game) file (located in the MII installation folder in the saves folder to the next player in line.
When the next player receives the saved campaign file they must place it in their saves folder and load the game. Once loaded rinse and repeat.
WARNING: It is very important when ending your turn that you do not disturb the pop-up events as the next players turn loads. Once the next player's turn has finished loading in front of you, you must SAVE the game and then QUIT the game. Closing events or responding to events or playing any aspect of a faction that is not yours will be considered cheating.
NOTE: In some cases when the next player's turn has loaded they will receive a pop-up event that requires a response. To minimize this without closing it for the other player; look to the top right corner of the pop up window for a small GOLD BOX. Click this box to minimize the event and now SAVE the game. When the game is saved Press ESC and select QUIT. You are now ready to pass the save game file on to the next player.
If you are starting the game for all players your faction MUST be the first line in the faction selection list. For example: If Three players have chosen the following countries: England, Venice and Sicily, then the English player would start the game like this: launch MII, click single player, Grand Campaign, Select England, next select Venice, and finally Sicily.
As for settings I normally choose the following:
Advice: Off
Difficulty: Medium or Hard
Battle Difficultly: Hard or Very Hard (Since we will be fighting each other's AI armies)
Manage All Cities: No
Show CPU Moves: No
No Battle time limit: Checked
If you're still having questions, it's best to test this out for yourself so that you can see how the game works by playing a few turns of each faction. Once you familiarize yourself with how turns play out for each player, to spare you some confusion either delete your play test saved game or save and rename it as test before you begin the campaign you'll be sharing.
Additionally if you haven't unlocked the factions in order to make selections player may wish to pick do the following:
Go to your Medieval II install folder > data > world > maps > campaign > imperial campaign
Open this file: descr_strat
It should display the playable factions list near the top. Remove the factions from the non playable list to the playable list. The list is below. You can add mongols and others, but I think there may be issues with certain aspects of playing them that I forget right now.
england
france
hre
spain
venice
sicily
milan
scotland
byzantium
russia
moors
turks
egypt
denmark
portugal
poland
hungary
papal_states
slave
Any questions feel free to post them, I'll try to answer as best I can or point you in th right direction.
To play real-time Multiplayer Campaign via Foldershare
By elGreco
Foldershare required version: FolderShare v2.5.10
Hi folks! This is a guide i have made to play real-time multiplayer campaign game with a couple of programs I've found.
Download the guide:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/attac...8&d=1186183642
Also you should download this nice program, so you don't have to use speakers or minimaze the game:
http://www.download.com/DirectoryMon...l?tag=lst-0-10
The program is called Directory Monitor. You simply extract the zip file in any location, open the program, select the directory with the saves and you are done!
When a file changes in that location an alert will start. That means that the player has played his turn and saved the game.
I attach a picture of what it should look like:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/attac...9&d=1186784129
One thing you must pay attention is that you must have the autosave disabled.
This can be done by editing the multiplayer.cfg file .
Otherwise you will hear one more ring for each player.
*SEE ABOVE for editing the config file.
With the above you can play real-time multiplayer campaign over the net pretty good!
PS: I plan to create a program on my own. In my program you will be able to enter the number of file changes before the alert.
With this one if there are many players it will be pretty tough to count yourself the number of alerts.

Lastly enjoy mates!
