    Default create unit cheat

Could someone give me a direct working example of the create unit cheat? And also, does it work in mods, and where exactly do I find the city name and unit name that I need? (is it the unit id, what you see when you mouse over the unit, etc. There are several names for a unit).

When I reform to imperial legionaries, I want to create them with the same experience level as the republicans they replace.

    Hello Garnier.....

    1. about the cheat

create_unit "settlement/captain/general" "unit id" "amount" "experience" "weapon type" "armor type"

    create_unit Messana capitan Nero principes 5 9 3 3

Only thing about wich i'm not sure is where you write capital letters.
this will give you 5 principes with 9 expirience and upgraded armor and attack to capitan Nero in Messana

    2. yes it works on mods as far as i think

    3. find city name on the campaign map....

    4. name of units.... you can go to custom battle and chose Romans then write names of units that you want on paper and use it in game

    I hope this works!

Eheh I don't think he intends to cheat. Probably he will remove with the proper console command money from his treasure, he will bring the legion to home city and let it wait some turns, etc...
His problem is that, when you want to upgrade an entire legion from republican (lorica hamata) to imperial (lorica segmentata), you must actually disband the former and train the units anew. In this way you will get them with basic experience, i.e., it's like you lose the legion's history and accomplishments.

This thing is very annoying and I was looking for a solution too. Garnier's idea will work for sure, at first I thought it was too tiresome, but maybe I will give a try!

Garnier I would suggest you to open a thread in the SPQR forum to discuss appropriate house-rules for this thing.

Right, I am not going to cheat if I get it to work..

What I will do, is disband the republican legionaries, then recruit the replacement imperials. Then next turn I will disband the imperials, then subtract the right amount of population via the cheat there, and then use create unit to get them to have the right experience. So it won't be creating anything new. The end result is, I will have switched my republican legionaries to imperials.

What I may do though, to make it easier or if the cheats don't work, is to change my EDU when I do this and just recruit the legionaries with the right average experience. I will experiment with it to see how I can get it to work.

That I would advice against. The main problem is that if you modify the text files, your changes won't have effect until the game is restarted. So you would have to save, quit, edit, start, load... too much a burden. The create units cheat would do the work without too much trouble.

But now I'm thinking about an issue. What if, in the legion you want to upgrade, some units are not full-strenght? There would be the need to first retrain them, and then replace with imperial units. This is because when you retrain units they lose some experience, for fresh soldiers are added to the veteran ones. If you replace directly with the cheat this effect is lost, and you end up with more experience than you should get.
A corollary, is that in this way you should wait to upgrade the barracks; at least, you should retrain the not-full republican cohorts some turns before the imperial barracks are completed.
Rules are needed to provide for a fair game and avoid exploits.

    Several things.

    1. When you retrain a depleted unit, it keeps the same experience of the few guys you start with, and gives it to the whole unit. So if you retrain one guy with lots of experience, you will have a cohort of 163 with that much experience. Its an exploit, and as such I have a houserule to always automerge units after battles to not exploit it.

    2. I don't see how the EDB option would be that hard, I've done similar things with EDB lots of times. But of course if I get the create unit cheat to work I won't have to.

    3. I won't retrain the republicans before building the barracks. Not all legions get refitted at the same time. I will make the barracks, and then refit them as I normally would, but replacing the republicans with imperials.

I don't think that cheats improves the game, and therefor I never use 'em. I respect those who do, but wouldn't it be more of a challenge to skip them?

Has anybody ever tried to use this cheat for other (AI controlled) factions?

I think it would be great fun to give some enemy control over some juicy armies to both speed up the game and create a challenge...

Cheats help but it depends what type of person you are. If you want to experiment with them just make a new campaign, it's great fun seeing what advantages you get. Also try editing the scripts, like the descr_strat file if you want to edit any unit or general. Just look at Leonidas's posts.

Unfortunately there isn't a 'create unit cheat', though there is a quick build cheat. If you want any cheats just ask, i'll post some up on here for you.

The only time I used the create_unit cheat was when my marian reforms took place a long time ago, I wanted to make my hastati, Principes, and Triarii into the new legions, as they would have done at the time of the reforms. I didn't take any money out, but now, sometimes I will do this with RS, where my pre-marian legio's I,II, and III are disbanded and made into consular legiions. I then take about half of what the recruitment cost would have been and take it out of my treasury as what it would have cost to replace equipment (although this wasn't really the case, the scutums were just cut down, the swords remained the same, the helms remained the same for a while, and the only state-paid for equipment would have been the mail or segmented armor).

with this code, go to your descr_strat notepad and look at those names for the units. you have to copy them exactly as they are in teh desc_strat, the names on the camp. map seldom work.
Yes, I hate the fact RTW is out and I still have a Japanese title. Come on now admins- let's get with the program.
