    Icon2 Best units (1.2 only)

    Hello guys,

I've just started playing Medieval 2 and I really like the game.

I would like to know your opinions about which are the best units of each particular type. I know this sorta stuff gets discussed a lot in general but since there is a huge difference between vanilla and 1.2 patch I would like see those units from a 1.2 campaign perspective only.

    Unit types:

    Spear:
    Archer:
    Crossbow:
    Gun:
    Infantry - 1h/shield:
    Infantry - 2h:
    Cavalry:
    Mounted ranged:
    Artillery:

    And last but not least:
    Best allround unit

This list does not factor into account; starting positions, unit cost/upkeep, nationality or religious preference and the likes.
Only give your thoughts on something your absolutely sure of. With reasoning.
Put the faction the unit is from in brackets please.
    And remember, 1.2 only.

    Thank you.

I have both the fusil and faust.

However, stats are misleading. Plus there are a lot of things not in the faust that are very important.

Like, guns can't shoot well over your own troops. So if you want to use a lot of ranged you're better off with archers.
And also stuff like rate of fire isn't in those pdf files. Archers shoot faster than crossbows.

There are a few I'm quite sure about which are the best in their unit type:

    Spear: Aventuros (Portugal)
    Gun: Janissary Musketeers (Turks)
Artillery: Serpentine for offensive anti troops / Mortar for utility (defence & offence)

    However,
    Infantry - 1h/shield:
Dismounted Conquistadores (Portugal/Spain) seem to have the best stats with highest defence. (16/22) (3 more offence than normal)

But what about Venetian heavy Infrantry (16ap/16) and the(Byzantium) Varangian Guard (20ap/15)? Which one of these 3 is overall the best?
In 1vs1 Im guessing the Varangian guard but for defensive purposes probably the Conquistadores?

    As for Archers
Scots guard are from my testing the best. Although practically the same with English Retinue Longbows and Dismounted Dvor. (Considering shooting power)

    ● Spear:

Spear : Papal Guard (Papal states). Pike : Aventuros (Portugal). Halberd : Swiss Guard (Papal Guard)

    ● Archer:
    Scots Guard (France)

    ● Crossbow:
Aventurier (France) / Genoese Crossbowmen (Milan)

    ● Gun:
    Janissary Musketteer (Turks)

    ● Infantry - 1h/shield:
Dismounted Conquistadores (Spain/Portugal) (Dismounted christian guards have same stats exactly, but move slower and cannot have armor upgrades)

    ● Infantry - 2h:
    Dismounted Noble/English/Portuguese knights (France/England/Portugal)

    ● Cavalry:
    Cannot say

    ● Mounted ranged:
Camel Gunners (Moors) / Vardariotai (Byzantium, Fast moving, best melee value) / Dvors (Russia, Highest missile value, ap melee)

    ● Artillery:
Basilik, Serpentine, Mortar, Monster Ribaut, Rocket Launcher (all have their specialities. None is better than another)

    ● Best allround unit
Norse Archer (Danes) : Low cost, low tech, low upkeep, good range value, very good melee value.
Genoese Crossbow Militia : Low cost, Low tech, low upkeep, excellent range value, good melee value, free garison in towns.
Mamluk Archers : medium cost, medium upkeep, medium tech, good range, good melee, cavalry, trainable in towns and castles.
    Elephant Artillery : Uber Pawnage

(for an allround unit comparison, you cannot put aside cost tech and retrainability issues)

Spear- Italian Spear Militia: Basically Armored Sgts. from the word go. By the time I head off on crusade, I have 1 gold chev on several units.

Ombudsman (or something)- I dont care what you say, I have NEVER had an OMBUDS spear wall broken.

Archer- Longbows, any kind. I havent seen Scots yet (what building makes those?)

Xbows- Genoese Crossbows. I've seen them take out 2 ranks in one volley. I have the most luck with a straight LOS and waiting 'till they are a bit closer than extreme range limit.

Calvary- Demi-Lancers. If you want to crush the enemies lines with H cav, go with Nobles or one of the Orders, but if you want the best flanking/prisoner taking cav in the game, its Demis!

Artillery- Serpentines. I always keep 4 of these in an army once they are available. Take them off hold fire, wait untill the enemy center is WELL within range (again, it seems to make them far more accurate) and win the battle in two to three volleys!

Best all-around- Norse Swordsmen. I dont know why, I just love 'em!

    ● Mounted ranged:
Camel Gunners (Moors) / Vardariotai (Byzantium, Fast moving, best melee value) / Dvors (Russia, Highest missile value, ap melee)
