    Default History Channel Features the CA

    Mods, if it's in the wrong place, I'm very sorry just please move it.

    This is the episode information for the show:
    Modern Marvels
    Episode: Barbarian Battle Tech

    Barbarians and technology, maybe they're not such a contradiction after all. It's the bow that nearly brought down Rome, and the suspension system that revolutionized the chariot. Barbarians built the forts that held out invaders, and forged the axe that named a country. We'll see inside the shop of one of the world's finest metal workers as he shapes iron ore into a classic Celtic sword. With 21st Century animation we'll rebuild a 2600 year-old hill fort--and show that protecting a village was as easy as digging a ditch. Finally, the designers of "Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion" reveal how they devised a system that accurately recreates the great barbarian battles. Which weapons scored best? The results may surprise you.
    Rating: TVPG
    Running Time: 60 minutes
    Genre:Science & Technology

    Also part of a review:

    With a decidedly more modern twist, BARBARIAN BATTLE TECH also illustrates through cutting-edge computer animation how simply digging a ditch was enough to protect a village. And the designers of "Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion" reveal how they devised a system that accurately recreates the great barbarian battles.

    Now I've seen the show, it's very good, but i was like OMG AWSOME WTF PWNAGE when they showed CA and I just thought it was really cool to have them illustrate the total war game and interview the CA team. Overall the hunic bow scored the best with the frankisca throwing axe second, and the History Channel admired the realism that the bow's power is diminished in the rain. The gladius was high for a great stabbing power, but the celtic longsword even higher for the immense hacking power able to take a man's head off clean. The history channel showed some really cool images of the real things too:

    CELTIC LONGSWORD

    HUNNIC BOW

    Pretty cool, but I think they would have gotten better results had they used a mod team of the likes of EB or Rise of Persia, instead.

    Hey i was wondering has anyone else seen this show? The history channel does a great job of breaking down the dynamics of the battlefield, such as shields breaking, axes ricocheting across the battlefield, and marching up a cramped space to attack a hill fort . Maybe CA should get some ideas for their new engine from the History Channel

    Looks familiar, but I think Ive seen something like this couple dasya go, where two guys have shown how to fight with swords, and attack with different parts of the sword too. It was pretty interesting since it looked like a dance. They shown the wapons themselves.

    I want that bow... I always wanted a Asian bow . Or the ones the Mongolians used. It's design defines style .

    Hey great timing! I just watched this last night.

    Anyway it was cool they showed CA and stuff. I agree though they should have went to a mod team to be more historical. But the way CA was talking it looked liked they were historian proffessors or something.
    If I can't cheat, how will I get through school???

    Rome: Total War gets all over the place. I've seen it used in some ancient history documentaries here in the UK (Battlefield Britain for one) and we even had a program called "Time Commanders" running a few years back that was basically a big LAN party with historians telling the players how pathetic they were doing.

    They never used the totalwar engine. they used CGI effects.

    Edit: yeah those guys who went on it were pathetic. Remember the battle of Watling street episode they were thrashed.

    Time Commanders for sure used the RTW engine. That show was huge on these forums, everybody wanted to see how the game looked as time commanders was out before RTW.

    Celtic sword is more advanced then Roman
    Fitz Salnarville, Duke William's favourite knyghte,
    To noble Edelwarde his life dyd yielde;
    Withe hys tylte launce hee stroke with thilk a myghte,
    The Norman's bowels steemde upon the feeld.
    Old Salnarville beheld hys son lie ded, 235
    Against Erie Edelward his bowe-strynge drewe;
    But Harold at one blowe made tweine his head;
    He dy'd before the poignant arrowe flew.
    So was the hope of all the issue gone,
    And in one battle fell the sire and son

    Maybe so, but when you're closely packed together in combat gladius's 'belly' stabbing pwns all You need more space to wield that celtic sword effectively (maybe even 2 handed?)
    The example of celtic sword exact ineffectiveness in close formation was at Battle of Watling street during Boudicca's revolt in 1st century A.D and also in many encounters with the german tribes

    Yes but as Barbarians Celtics would fight in shallow or deep mob - not in formation

    When they succeeded that or ambushed unprepared romans, yes they would be in a good position (i.e. when Helvetiis defeated consular army just before the start of Caesar's Gaul conquests), but mostly they would be firstly 'nicely' showered by pila, which would kinda slow them down at least or break their charge completely.
    And imo when roman line is in such good shield compact/close formation then 1 barbarian is kinda fighting 2 men at the same moment imo. Also the rotating tactic when front line is changed with fresh troops
    Roman organisation, teamwork and discipline pwn all
    And yes this confrontation between different swords is very nicely shown in Time Commanders Boudica's revolt episode

    I saw this documentary, it was pretty interesting, though CA didn't bring too much to the table, they could have easily made a better episode without them.

    Has anyone ever seen Barbarian Week on the History Channel? All Roman/Barbarian stuff all week, I was tempted come down with the flu just to watch all of it.

    Yay I saw Barbarian I (Huns, Goths, Vikings, Mongols) and II (Vandals, Lombards, Franks, Saxons) series. It was freaking awesome and interesting I must say. Very much info, learned many new things. Made me wanna go play RTW modified BI
