now, i dont know where the thread for the roman intro video Name and I proposed went, but i wrote a reply to all the criticism we got about it which i was going to go and put into the thread, but it isnt here anymore, so here it is:
As most of you know, there has been a lot of criticism about the first video we (Name and I) made, on topics ranging from video quality to the voice. I want to address the voice. Name and I are a two-man group, obviously, and we can only do so much in terms of voice. We aren’t like CA, who has many people of different accents at their disposal. We do not have that luxury. We have at our disposal two teens, one with a German accent and another with an American accent (which would be me). We don’t have a fancy recording studio like CA does for its audio. All we have is a very good program, Audacity, and a computer microphone to record voice with. That’s it for our “equipment” to do the audio. To add, our budget is much smaller than CA’s. After being introduced to EB, I, along with Name, decided we should try to give something back to the EB team and this wonderful mod by attempting to do an intro video for the Romani, as a token of gratitude for all their hard work.
It went well at first, and we wrote the general script and timed it with the music, along with music editing, in the first two days of starting the project, tweaking the script and such later on. Then came the hard part- the actual audio and video. I did the audio and Name did the video. I would like to take the time to tell everyone that Name did at least 65% of this project, if not more- I just did the audio- and he really deserves the credit for all the hard work, not me (so if any reputation points are being given, it’ll be to him, not me). Then we, to be specific, Name encountered a problem- he lost his video editing program. Now, I don’t really know how he got past that problem, But he did, and was able to put forth a really good movie, in my opinion.
When the audio and video was finished, we released it to the public. Now we welcome criticism, and are open to suggestions, as long as they fall in our guidelines. Of course, as with anything, we expected a little better feedback than we got, but that’s okay- that’s life. Aristotle once said, “A man can easily avoid criticism by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” And we have no intention of being nothings, obviously.
But I would like say that there have been comments how the voice sounds too “American,” and how it sounds too “teen like.” My response to the “too teen like” comment: if you listen to the hastati voice they use in EB. I think it sounds pretty young like, in my opinion. The idea for the audio was that it's supposed to sound like an ambitious young roman, who has great expectations for what’s in store. The voice isn’t supposed to sound like an old guy, who is much wiser than the young roman, and doesn’t speak as haughtily as the young guy does. And IIRC, a person could sign up for the military in late teens-early twenties and on. So to put it straight, the voice is to represent a haughty young soldier who just enlisted ad has great expectations for Rome and himself. To further stress my point, the average person who rushes up to join the army think war is a glorious thing, which it is not. In his book, Parachute Infantry, David Webster, a WWII US paratrooper who fought in D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and Operation Market Garden, describes a new recruit of just 19 years of age who was very eager to go to war. As they were marching through Germany, David’s unit passed by a French FFI soldier executing a Nazi SS officer by shooting him in his head, causing the officers brains to splatter out onto the snow. The new recruit threw up and started sobbing when he saw that. David said to him, “ya that’s your war full of fun and games you sonafa*****!” I think he puts it best on how new recruits view war.
Anyhow, about the suggestion to get an adult to do the audio- I don’t know about the adults in your life, but the ones in my life lead extremely busy lives and cant be bothered by some kid and his game.
Another thing which was noted in the comments following the first release was that it sounded too “American like.” All I can say is that you can access the script with the link which was posted by Name in the first release thread. If you think you can do better, feel free to do it yourself. When you have the finished audio, tell one of us, and one of us will give you one of our email addresses and you’ll send it to us and we’ll review it. But I must add- the intro movies for the roman families in RTW sound not much less American than my voice does, so we’ll keep it at that.
One last thing- someone, and I wont say who, said that the way I pronounced “Rome” sounded weird. Now, I don’t know what nationality that person is, or whether others think that too, but that’s something I cannot help. Thats how we Americans pronounce “Rome,” whether you like it or not. Besides, that’s how the voices in the RTW faction intros pronounce it, as long with a dozen or so of my friends (All are American), so I have no problem how it sounds. If you have a problem with it, don’t listen to the audio- it’s you're loss, not mine.
Finally (ya- I know this is a long post, sorry), I would like to say that Name and I decided that if we get the same kind of response to our second, and final, attempt at a Romani intro movie as we did the first attempt, we will be abandoning the project altogether, due to stress levels and work ethics, now that school (at least for me) is starting in less than a month. So, we hope you like the final movie!
for those who did not see the movie we made, here it is:
