Default PRO DEO ET REGE: Kongeriget Danmark

    MEDIEVAL II TOTAL WAR:
    PRO DEO ET REGE
    “For God and King”
    KONGERIGET DANMARK

*Special thanks to joedreck and Salty of Kings Banner Mod fame and their upcoming amazing-looking collobaration Art of War!!! Two excellent modders doing their best to beautify to the game!

    KONGERIGET DANMARK:
Denmark is a relatively new kingdom in the world of Christendom, emerging from centuries of paganism under Viking rule. Exactly one hundred years ago, Harold Bluetooth, the Viking King of the Danes, embraced Christianity, not just personally, but also on behalf of his people. Though the Vikings' fierce conviction in battle was a true asset, forsaking these pagan ways and embracing Catholicism is what has actually elevated Denmark into a true northern power. With the Reich and other Catholic Kingdoms offering support against stubborn Viking pagans, the Kings of Denmark now enjoy an absolute authority that has never been seen in the region before.

I don't know about the historical accuracy of the colors (as far as I know, the blue and yellow patterns were used in addition to the red and white ones, though mostly in heraldry rather than actual dress - but my knowledge on it is sketchy at best) but the new colors have made the Danes, a former favorite, my most reviled enemy.

I am a Finn. Blue and yellow are the national colors of Sweden. It'd be like...being an American and being forced to play Canada as the faction that most closely represents yours. The pain! The PAIN!

I suppose it's just as well I started a new Polish campaign to test 0.4. The Danes will rue the day they adopted their proto-Swedish guise!

Well they have based the colors on the danish Royal coat of arms (So it's more likely that the swedes adopted the colors), wether or not they actually used such shiny colors and to that extent, is the question. Personally I doubt it, at least for the common man in the army, but nobles and royal soldiers probably wore it. The red and white colors was first introduced later, which of cause was/is based on the Dannebrog and it first came into use when it, according to the tale - fell from the sky in a very bloody battle, during the Baltic crusades, 1219. But it was more of a war banner than a actual country flag, in the medieval period.

    Some Scandinavian units:

    Toy soldiers:

King of Denmark facing Knight of Sword-Bearers Order - 13th c.

Duke Christian I of Oldenburg, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden - 1448-1481 c.

Duke Christopher III of Bavaria, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden - 1440-1448 c.

I know its long time since there has been any activity in this section, however i feel that i must correct Recon's statements, The Danes never used the battlecolour Yellow and blue, the Royal coat of arms has been used for the king only, not his soldiers. So giving the danes that is wrong history wise. Correct Dannebrog "fell to the ground" the 15 june 1219, however in the Bayeux Tapestry (from 1077) there are several images of danish soldiers in the battle of Hastings under a red banner with a white cross, and in the Spanish national archives they have a painting from 1100 with danes under a Dannebrog also. Before the Dannebrog danes normally used the Raven banner since they from old times believed that they brought luck. I see no problem in having the Royal Coat as a national flag for the danes, but the uniforms should be red and white (if any). In the Osprey series about scandinavia you will also see several pictures of danes wearing red and red/white uniforms.
