    Default Map

I think I have found my new favorite mod. I have been into Road to Jeruselem for some time now, but after playing TLR im sold. I just started an English campeign, and my only complaint is the map.

I dont think any mod has really nailed a perfect map yet. I like the big map style, but there are way to few provinces. RTJ has a fairly detailed and well layed out map as far as provinces go, I was wondering if you guys trade mod resources like that. It seems you do, looking at all the skins and unlocked units.

I would do the map modding myself if i could find a tutorial or what not. I would love to help. Im a history major and love this stuff. My idea for more provinces would still fit into the balance of the game, and give the game a more "realistic feel" as far as taking settlement and a more epic style wars.

If the current Provinces are taken, the main settlment stays but little pieces of its land would go to ACTUAL other cities that existed in that region were created. France and england should have way more cities, and would make the wars there fit more with the style of the times. The loss of one settlment, while harmfull should not cripple your entire econemy or give you control of huge tracts of land. The income of the current large settlements could be broken up and a percentage given to each new settlement made in that area, keeping the econemy balance in place.

Im sure theres some issues i havnt thought of, but id love input on how to do this, and would work on maps myself.

The current map Torn is using has already reached the limit of number of provinces. As well Torn and his modders has made has so much more interesting factions and rivalries than the corny wars between France and England. My suggestion is to enjoy this mod and try something different factions or wait for kingdoms vanilla game

I believe that what Rex meant was that LTR is not centered and unbalanced on Western Europe only ,like most of the mods are including vanilla.

LTR is trying to present most of the world that is on the map in balance.
So focusing too many provinces on one side, will be on account of some other areas that are equally important. That side would be under represented then.

That would give player more equal options to play with, and find his favorite zone of interest.

Not everyone is interested in playing English or French. And even if they are, you can play them only so many times, before you get bored with it.And then what ?

People that play this game came from all over the world and Anglo-French conflict was not their most important thing, if they are from somewhere else. After all it was not most important event of that period, or even top 5 event.

In my opinion Thorn made fair representation of Anglo-French area , in additon to some other very important areas of that time, like Persia and Middle East in general.

+++ EDIT : there is limit of 199 provinces in total. that you can put on the map.

I like the mod very much.

I like the slow pace and historical events.

I like the fact that they added more Muslim factions in the east. It makes crusades and Jihads more interesting and challenging.

I think the map is a decent size but my only nag is that most of the province names just mimic the settlement name.

Rennes region should be Brittany, etc.

It seems a province or two has already been renamed. (Lower Austria).

I was hoping that this will be something that is still a work in progress.

Keep up the good work Torn.

Hey if you want you could make us a list of region names, that would make Torn(The Daddy) implement it quicker.

I agree, provinces should deffinatly be named there original names and not after their settlements. Ill try and help with the list.

I wasnt focusing on French and English when I came up with this thread, it was just an Example because it is a well known and documented region of conflict for this time. The ideas of more provinces to help give that medieval warfare style of capturing and holding castles and downs before winter, so ground could be held until the next spring. But i didnt know there was a province cap built into the game. The Lavant and Southern Spain where some areas i would have loved to work on as well. They are known for there huge numbers of castles. One in every passs and valley. It would give that grinding siege war feel to the game. I like this mod, and think it is very well done. I wish there was a way to get around that settlement cap.

Actually, I would love to help.

I think it would help with the immersion factor.

After starting to undertake it, it seems it will need to be a group effort.

Perhaps since you are from Spain you could help with the Iberian Peninsula.

Some province names and some city names will need to be changed.

I guess only so much can be done for historical accuracy since some settlements didnt even exist at the begginning or end of the game timeframe.

I am not sure of all names and research will need to be done.

I will say up front that I may not be 100% accurate so any critiques will be welcome.

Here are the ones that I have already done so far and have edited my own game files.

    I started with the French.

    Angers - Anjou
    Bordeaux - Aquitaine
    Marsaille - Provence
    Dijon - Burgundy
    Rhiems - Champagne
    Antwerp - Flanders
    Bruges - Friesland
    Paris - Ile de France
    Metz - Lorraine
    Portiers - Poitou
    Toulouse - Languedoc

    Now the English.

    London - Wessex
    York - Northumbria
    Nottingham - Mercia
    Caervon(sp) - Wales

    Now a few German provinces.

    Frankfurt - Franconia
    Hamburg - Saxony
    Hohenstauffen - Swabia
    Nuremburg - Bavaria
    Bern - Switzerland (?)
Innsbruck - Upper Austria , (Tyrolia)
    Bologna - Tuscany
    Prague - Bohemia

A few Islands and Hungarian provinces.

    Ajaccio - Corsica
    Calagari - Sardinia
    Campulung - Wallachia
    Cluj - Transylvania
    Iasi - Moldavia
    Sofia - Bulgaria
Buda and Pest coild both be Budapest I suppose... but they were not joined till the 1800's.

Perhaps someone with great interest and knowledge of Eastern Europe and the mideast could assist.

I was using MTW 1 to piece together what provinces I could.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Perhaps these two cities should be in Western Flanders and Eastern Flanders respectively.

I saw a while back that someone actually made a mod incorporating the Flemish as a playable faction.

I would love that too, as I live in spain a there is pretty much a castle in every town. If I remember right I think there are over 1500 castles in the Iberian peninsula.

@rugin84 correction I thought that the brittania game of Kingdoms would be partly in France but it seems it is an later era than the vanilla game

@mlp071 well spoken, agreed on 100% and very polite explanation of my words, thanks

again @ rugin84 due to the balancing and low disorder rate this mod is excellent in comparing to all the other mods i have played, where you had to stack most of your army inside your settlements to keep civil unrest down. Which involved 90% of the battles were siege battles, gladly Torn has done his great job that we finally have far more field battles than all other mods i have played. So I doubt that the community or Torn wants more siege fights.

@ moobke maybe a better choice for Brugge (Bruges) is Brabant. Friesland/Frisians was independent from arround 800 and had a long history as descndents from viking age though with the location on the map and name of the city Brugge, Brabant will be a better choice.

The Dutch will be mourning though...

Of course for a more authentic feel you should use medieval maps as templates, not a national geographic satellite shot.

I like the idea of historical names of cities-provinces. great. I think it would just make the presentation of the mod that much better.

You cant forget areas like the middle east , russia, greece, ect...
Maybe someone who is a native of those areas can help with the names.

greece will not be a problem, someone already submitted the names, though the middle east and northern africa will be a mayor problem, because 95% of medieval history is focussed on the western world: England, France etc.

My focus is more on the muslim part of the world at that time though my resources are limmitted because i can't read Arabic

Sometimes changing region names will have to be accompanied by editing ../Data/text/export_ancillaries.txt for the titles to avoid confusion. Nothing wild, but mentionable.

I go with the idea of having not only the names of the regions in the original language, but also the titles. I'm playing the HRE right now and some of the titles are in German, others in English. I have a Graf von Brandenburg (if I remember correctly ) and a Count of Holstein...
    But that's easy. Count=Comte=Graf, Duke=Duc=Herzog...

I haven't been here for a while, but right after I've come back to playing Med2 and trying out The Long Road, finding one of my Generals holds the title of "Grand Duke of Frankfurt", which should be "Grossherzog von Frankfurt", and seeing "Lower Austria" instead of "Niederösterreich", I suddenly felt the urge of having to fix that.
But, since the region west of that is now named Tirol instead of "Oberösterreich", I'll leave it at Österreich.

    Not to forget
    Lubeck=Lübeck
    Nuremburg=Nürnberg

Quite a bit to tidy up there.

Hmm... When I change the title of a county/duchy/whatever to that of another one, it'lll also have to get the right coat of arms for it.
That might keep me busy for a while.

Thanks to all that provided a lot of appropriate region names already,
    -Der Ketzerfreund.
