Default Medieval Total War 2 doesn't start.

I've downloaded the game from steam, twice now with the same results. Simply put the game doesn't start. When I try to start it up through steam, I get the "Preparing to launch" window briefly, which then exits and does nothing. If I click on the Launcher.exe in the M2TW folder, I get a message saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)". If I click on the medieval2.exe I get the error "Failed to find steam." All other steam games work fine for me, and this game used to work until I built a new computer. Currently, I'm running with

    gForce 8800 GTS 640 mb
2 gb Kingston Ram 800 mhz
    E6600 2.4 gghz C2D processor.

Would any of those products have any incompatabilities with the game that are causing this error? Does anybody have any idea? Thanks in advance.

    Can't think of anything.

Try verifying the files (right click in steam > properties > verify integrity of game cache).

If that's fine, I'd suggest you log a support request at support.steampowered.com; this doesn't sound like a M2TW error per se.

    Possible compatibility issues.

The Direct2Drive version available requires the game to be up to date with 1.02 which is only available in the latest version of the full download. The retail version of Medieval II is compatible with Kingdoms.

The Gamestop, EB Games and other retailers offering digital versions are NOT compatible with their retail counter-parts whatsoever, they require to be both purchased from the same site.

    It's in the readme/eula, afaik.

The problem is that, understandably, no one reads them
