    Some info on the model:

    I did not use any meshes from the game, i made all of it from scratch.
    I took only the face textures from the game (and 3 of them from Day of Defeat).
    The model is based on reference images (the shield on the back too seems plausible, but i originally took the idea from the mtw1's varangians info picture).
    The byzantines used long spears along with shields, in tight packed formations (not the western spear wall though). So i went with the 2 handed pike anims and schiltrom (they are more effective in this formation than in spearwall. I wanted to use the spear along with the shield, but it looked really weird in the walking animation so i put the shield on their backs when using the spear and on their left arm when fighting with swords.

    Its free to be used with any mod (with credits of course).

    The unit has both spear and sword - in schiltrom mode they use their spear only (even if u alt+attack).
    In normal mode they can use both spear and sword (the latter if u give the alt+attack command). But watch out - if they are attacked (charged) when standing idle they will automatically switch to swords (its a game engine feature, cannot be changed) - it can be a problem when they are attacked by cavalry. To avoid this, give them the normal attack command and they will use their spears.
    Otherwise they are very effective, especially in the schiltrom formation. I put them in the Varangian guard's recruit slot (i moved the Varangians to the town hall, like the janissaries).

    How do you make it so that a unit has a shield on it's back when using one weapon and has it on it's arm when using another. Very nice unit, the Upgrade especially, and of course + Rep.

    So how did you manage to get them to have the weapon 2 handed ?



    If you can do that you need to make a teaser like unit . A Mace/Seleucid pikeman

    He gave them the pike animations from vanilla.

    I'm trying to add this unit to SS 4.0 but I'm having no luck with it. I keep getting a CTD at the splash screen. The error log says that in the export_descr_unit.txt, it can't find the soldier model battle "byzantine_heavy_spear". I added the add-on info to the bottom of the battle_models.db file, I don't know what the problem could be. Can I get some help on this?

    Hmmm... Did you increase the section count (or whatever it is called) at the beginning of the file with 2 (first row)? Default modeldb is 701 i think.
    Or you could add it not to the end, but in the middle somewhere (i did it and works that way too).

    The first row of my modeldb. Notice the red 703 - the default was 701. And i added it to the end of the file. You need the 2 increment because the 2 ug levels. Take a look at your modeldbs first row and increase that number with 2. That should work.

    I don't get it, why would the game be saying that it can't find the byzantine heavy spearmen soldier model battle even though the info is in the modeldbs file?

    oh, it's just that in SS? there was another new pikemen right? i thought it was created by LAca, but guess not. The point is, when you enabled the unit on SS, can you share it?

    Trajan, in that case you can try 801 (799+2).

    That only causes the unit to be invisible, it doesn't cause a crash (unless it's too high). I'll see what I can do, give me 5-10 mins.

    :o There's like the whole medieval directory in that download.

    :hmmm: I'm getting a crash too, I'm too tired to mod now, I'll try tomorrow.
