What exactly is the signifigance (sp?) of this?
Supposedly it gives some kind of bonus when charging, but its seems a bit buggy to me-you are probably better off kepping cavalry in regular formation imo.
its for opening a gap in the enemy infantry line.
It gives + charge bonus and opens infantry formation in one point.
It is powerful only when charging and when you stop you will lose many soldiers.Don't suggest it.

Its useful when the AI uses it. You can tell in advance that the AI is planning to charge you.

Its ment for fighting in Gaps, dont use it in plains.
Its for getting the first couple of men at the front of the formation killed.
No, its actually to open gaps. I use it when hitting a unit from behind.

Another thing i have found out about wedge formation is that if your general unit is cavalry dont put wedge formation on because he will be leading the charge and is very likely to die first (especially if your charging a phalanx from behind), this has happend to he loads of timeslol
