Ok, I'm abit new to this game, though played RTW to death.

I was wondering how to get back on the good side of the pope, bear in mind I just sacked Rome and instead of trying for the nice ransom you get for him, I executed him.

He keeps calling crusades now against my citadel at Toulouse, and while its very good fun mowing down pilgrims with bombards every time they cross the bridge to the north, its kind of putting on hold my plans to go conquer the middle east.

So any pointers on how to feel the love from the papacy once more?

Hm....approach the pope with a diplomat, offer a ceasfire, pay whatever it needs to be, then ask for reconciliation and give him an unimportant settlement. I usually give him an island like Ajaccio or Cagliari so he's contained and I can assassinate him more easily.

Yeah, just basically mend up things with the other catholic nations and be nice. When you get reconciled give the pope cash or settlement donations. Usually something around 1000 will make him very happy although I just drop a couple hundred on him. Do his mission when he assigns them and go on his crusades.

    Make him a happy pope.

    Simple answer: money

Also, stop brawling with other Catholics, i.e offer ceasefires to them if you're at war with any - until your rating with the Pope rises again.

As for the Pope personally, send a diplomat to cross his palm with silver. Offer him a Regular Tribute of 50 for 20 turns as a gift, and occasionally give him the odd 500 nugget as a gift until your rating pops back up. I say gift because if you try bartering when he doesn't like you he'll more than likely slam the door in your face.

I always have a Regular Tribute in place with the Papacy throughout the game, it seems to keep him off your back a bit.

Just assassinate the pope or get you leader killed simple. Then to stay in his good books join crusades and capture the crusade target

Assassinating the Pope is usually very difficult and when you fail (and you often will), you are deep do-do.

500-1000 as one time gifts will usually bring your relations up a notch for each gift. I give 100-200 as regular tribute (gifts also) which keeps me at the highest level or two all the time, so the occasional transgression does not hurt me. I typically leave the pope alone, and Rome for that matter. Give him something in the middle east, he'll lose it quickly enough and you can retake it later. My favorite tric when giving a settlement is to destroy everything in it first (not churches! that ticks him off too), take the money and give the place away, it's a liability to whoever you give it to at that point.

It's best if you don't get on the Pope's bad side in the first place.
If he tells you to stop attacking someone, stop.
Don't attack him, don't kill him, do what he says.

He can make your life miserable!

lol That cracks me up, you burned his house down, probably killing any pets he might have had, you destroyed his army and then executed him, now you wanna be on his good side because he's interfering with your plans? hahaha Thats great.

In my game as spain the pope has loved me all the game and its 1250 by now(i would say the pope is my bi$%$· but im catholic IRL) just always have a diplomat near him and give money from time to time, also make him your allie and send many priest to infidel/pagan lands to convert thouse scum to the only true church for generating more rank to your priests (joking im the "all is faith" kinda guy ), i have about 7 cardinals and every pope has been spanish since the 1100's also all crusades have been declared by me and the pope never denies one, some guys said that jihad was more powerfull than a crusade ,imho their are balanced becouse the faction, IF catholic needs to be excoulgated (sp?) but having all the catholic factions crusading your a55 is a pain there.

Pretty much, you will most likely control the college of cardinals but the papal states can still contribute their man or two. Unless you have one or less than one cardinal, you will win the vote.
