I’d done a small bit of modding on RTW, but never released any of it as it had all been done before in some shape or form.
I found that faction easy to do, if a bit time consuming, and I offered the faction to S2bean for his RegionsMod as I knew he was looking to do one. He didn’t use it though, so I expanded it into a small mod (based on the Regions and Provinces bigmap) that used all the faction slots possible for different cultures in order to fill out the map and have less sprawl of rebel settlements, but I didn’t know enough about the other cultures to really do them justice. I left one faction unused along with a link to a tutorial on how to edit them to be whoever any users of the mod wanted them to be, on the off chance people were interested in doing a faction that wasn’t in the game as I was!
I left an open invitation for anyone who wanted to use any of that mod (which I haven’t updated as my main intention was to create an Irish faction which I did), and as a result Deux lo Volt picked up the Irish faction and rebalanced the unit stats (I made some units too weak and many a bit too strong so they killed all around them after they got to a certain level). I’ve since given a small input on any historical mistakes or potential improvements that I’ve come across while playing DLV, but I like modding so much I am currently concentrating, as part of a small team, on a mod based on making a more historically accurate representation of the HRE, just for kicks.
I happened upon the Common Community (and the Thema Devia for that matter) from the links to latest posts on the front page while checking for mods and tutorials and basically just started posting my opinions in them. I have a decent knowledge of history in general, especially when it comes to Ireland, but there were some excellent threads in the VV on stuff I never knew about so I was very interested in those (I’m not too keen on the “what if” threads though). The site has a lot of very good topics and there’s some very intelligent posters who know their stuff too, always a good thing. Some of the debates here are excellent and I’ve learned a lot from them, which I never thought I would when I posted here first. Its not just a game site!
I do notice that a lot of people seem to take one side or the other from the word go without necessarily knowing all of the facts or showing any consideration for the opposing argument in some of these threads though, so I try and post an argument that gives an overview of the topic and then show my own views but also take stock of why the opposing side feel the way they do and show why I don’t necessarily agree, hopefully without loosing my head. If there’s no sign of a decent debate happening or if it turns into a spam fest I’d try to leave it alone and move on.
I like the way this site is run and I like the type of stuff that’s posted on it, from mods to the informative threads to the completely insane threads. It’s interesting and the idea of having a government that oversees it all is class. Being a part of that system would definitely appeal to me and if I had the ability to do it I think I’d like to get more involved in how it all comes together and maybe get into some of the more involved stuff like writing articles or even go for a staff position if it was thought I could do it, and if I had the time to commit to doing it justice!
