    Default HI! and questions.

hI, I just dl-ing this mod and it is one of the best mods in the community. Very nice job and thx everyone who help on developing. I have some simple questions and just wanted to know if u could answer them.

For the romans, is the shield wall just a really tight formation or is there something special to it? As far as i can tell ,its just a tight formation with more likely missle fire taking disadvantage.

And for a field tactic, is it better to keep the imperial roman formations in to rows of: 4,5,6,7, or 8? JUst a question for tactical use.

    Thx guys.

Hey cheatham. Welcome to the mod.

The shield wall is situational. I've tested it against different factions and I found that it helps with defense but only against barbarians. Civilized factions seems to cut through my legions faster with it activated. With a few bronze chevrons under your units belt it could help in defending against bowmen, civ or barb.

I use different lengths for different situations. I use squares when attacking and rectangles for defense. I would recommend a squarish length because it's an all around good formation.

I find shield wall effective against charges, so only use against barbarians or cav. However as romans you have less men per unit than the enemy, it is important therefore to be able to flank and attack with more men at the point of battle to overcome these odds, esp later when u get barbs with silver chevs, to do this u need the ai to attack ur main battle line, and then move spare units around to flank, u will only get spare units if ur main battle line consists of less units than the ai, so u need them to be as wide as possible and on gaurd mode to hold, because shield wall reduces the spaces it should be not used if it can be advoided.
So keep the rows as shallow as possible, ie 3 or 4.

Shield wall should be 2 ranks deeps, people abuse it and make it 3-4 which is not what it was intended for/

I only ever use it to cover alot of space for oter troops to reform, or fire from in.
In FA TW is use the sheild wall alot, folding back the wings to prevent flanking, it's a usefull formation.

really I had no idea. I basically used shieldwall for a tighter formation, or to fit my units through gaps in the enemy line to get behind them.

How exactly do you usually arrange your legions?

If you mean how I deploy a (post-)marian legion, I simply group them all and do SHIFT-5. But I have slightly modified that formation to better suit my needs
