Default New to SPQR, questions on creating Legions and more.

Big fan of RTW mods, I've played EB, and Forth Age(LOTR mod)... trying my hand today at SPQR. I'm downloading it now.

    1. I feel like I've missed something... Though I've read the readme and Lt's House Rules. From my browsing the forum, it seems you can only group units that are recruited from the same city(ie forming a Legion). Am I correct in this assumption?

    2. Also, though I am somewhat read up on Roman History, I'm not totally familiar with what exactly a cohort is, say versus what a 1st cohort is...

    3. Is there a 'guide' per say on how play SPQR(other than the suggested House Rules).

    4. What are the requirements, or what things need to happen before I move to take Rome?

    5. I noticed in the Preferences folder, from reading another post, the Unit Experience Upgrade is FALSE? Is this intended and will my units still receive battle experience?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to fully immersing myself in this mod.(I bought the HBO ROME series Saturday and have watched the first 6 episodes in preparation!).

Awesome another Rome fan! I just ordered the first season a couple days ago. My family won't see me for a while.

    To answer your questions.

    1. There is nothing stopping you from making a legion out of different numbered legios. The XI can be in the same legion as the V. It's only there to add a layer of depth and historical accuracy. You may do as you wish.

    2. A cohort is the fourth level of organization for the Roman military. Each cohort was made up of three maniples (480-630 men). The First Cohort consisted of 800 to 1,050 men as well as the legionary Eagle.

    3. You don't need an in depth guide but there are three basic guidelines for playing.
    1. Pace Yourself- If you're playing with the script activated, then blitzing is the last thing you wanna do. Also, turtling for the first 8 or 10 years will allow the AI to build up to present a proper challenge.
    2. Build as many Legions as possible - As your empire grows, more legions will be needed to maintain it. Moreso for the fact that in the beginning, you're already in danger of elimination.
    3. Watch for Loyalty - As your generals win battles they will become aware of their power. Their loyalty will drop the more they win and if it gets too low they, along with the legion, will rebel.
    4. The people must love you. Like vanilla, you must gain the support of the people to attack the senate. That's the game's requirements but the more pressing one is that the legions you attack with must be strong enough to stand up against the senate's legions. Other players, including myself, prefer to attack once Imperial Legions are experienced and in full strength. Honestly, that just gets you a good chance to win. The Senate legions are still highly experienced with gold chevrons so either way it'll be a bloodbath.

    5. If it's active on mine, then I don't see it. My premarius legions still gain experience. The same Triarii I had from the beginning have double silver chevrons and gold chevrons.

Whew! I hope that helps. Feel free to ask anymore questions. Someone is bound to have the answer. (Or else Lt will just say read the README)

GaussSoldier said almost everything, I will only try to add something from my point of view

You can find details here. The first cohort was composed by picked men, so it was entrusted the legion's eagle.

When you conquer enough (many) cities people will begin to love you. At that point a message will appear, saying that you can use popular support to march on Rome. Senate's forces are very strong, so many suggest to go with imperial legionaries, but I will try it with republican legions, bacause that's what Caesar did

That only removes the graphic effect when units get an experience upgrade, i.e. they turn bright for a couple of seconds. I set it to 'on' in my game because I like to see immediately which units are doing well.

The first season is good, the only problem is that battles are never showed, they are just told by someone. I hope something changes with season 2, I will get it shortly

Theres a great fight scene in the 3rd last episonde, a gang war basicly.

    Thanks for the info guys...

I have a follow on question:

Are the 1st Cohorts Eagles represented in this Mod? I recall reading across something while browsing various threads someone saying they played versus Rome and captured an eagle?

If so, how do I know which unit has my Eagle? I inspected my units previous to a battle and didnt notice an obvious Eagle standard on any of my units. Are there penalties for losing an eagle for your general/units/home city?
