Default How do I get my soldiers to earn exp?

Most of the time my units will rarely ever pass into the silver chevron. While I notice that the AI armies usually have LOTS of chevrons. And most of their experienced units have lower amounts of men (Like 3 silver chevron unit with 50 soldiers). I always retrain my units after battle. Is that reducing the exp gain? Is it better to just leave the units damaged and gain more exp?

im pretty sure that retraining doesnt lose cheverons but sometimes some dont use your already expreinced troops. for example when i conquer a new settlement i start to recruit new units and forget about my old ones.
    To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence;
supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

Each man in the unit gains experience seperately, and then the "average" is what you see on the unit card.

If you use a 3 man unit of horse archers to run down roting enemies, his experience will go up much faster than an 80 man unit, because fewer total kills (for the unit on the whole) are required to hit the next "level".

Now if you level up that 3 man horse archer unit to gold chevrons and then retrain them...then you get a whole unit of gold horse archers, and fast!

It's pretty well set in stone...I'll post it again for those who ignored it.

i think when you retain and unit your more likely to lose exp chevrons because you watering down the experianced unit with fresh unexperinced soliders, i gain most of my exp from being seiged all the time lol.

I am actually the reverse. I train new units so that most of them can be garrison troops for the cities, and I send the experienced veterans into war.

if you disable the moral your units will gain exp much faster but the enemy will never run away . also in autobattle. the best way to gain exp is to add exp in export_descr_buildings I think

    disable morale?

Is that an in game option or I have to change the settings externally.

And about leaving your units nearly dead to gain massive exp, doesn't the computer automerge almost dead units? How would I prevent that?

    In medieval2.preference

Edit it and find moral then change 1 to 0
but that mean you should kill all enemy to win

I couldn't disable morale, as I am a ********** and don't pull back my troops. I need the morale on to tell me when I am losing a battle XDD

OK, so how then less than 100 of my man made about 550 kills in single battle, and gained no xp, and i remember in one battle i gived control of my seond army to the AI, but in battle by the time they came i alredy won it, killing most of enemie troops, still some of troops i leaded had bunch of kills, gained no xp, and some of my troops leaded by AI gained 1 xp without killing anyone?

Experience is a somewhat murky subject. The most certain way to gain it is simply to kill enemies. Each level of experience seems to require more killing to reach. Plus Killing routers do not count nearly as much as killing opponents who are fighting back.

However, sometimes just showing up for the battle will cause a unit to gain experience. So I suppose there is some randomness involved as well.

There are other ways to gain experience as well. There are Temples that will grant experience bonuses to troops that train (or retrain) there. You can also gain experience by careful merging of units after a battle. This is a very tricky business however, as you can lose experience doing this as well. Typically by merging a larger, more experienced unit into a smaller, less experienced one you can bring the second unit up a chevron, and sometimes the first one as well.

I have never seen units lose experience while retraining in a city however, no matter how few people they had left. Only when merging with other units.

This is all with version 1.5 as well. With earlier game versions it may well be different.

There is A LOT of randomness involved: several times lately I witnessed routing enemy units gaining experience while being pursued and killed lol. I seem to remember that retraining them decreases experience a bit too, but that's only fine, otherwise we would all have 3 gold chevrons units!
Just keep using your veterans troops, make them fight many battles, avoid merging them but retrain from time to time. In this way you will be able to keep several effective armies.

I have noticed something in battle. I have played as romans and attacked greeks. I had equiltes with 3 gold chervons( 81 in unit). As they fought and died they were losing chevrons!

I don't know, that occured for first time.Is it normal?

The experience shown on the unit is an average of the experience carried by the men in the unit. Those men could have different levels of experience.

If you loose the most experienced men it could be enough to reduce the average experience of the unit as a whole...and hence the experience downgrade.

Same works in reverse. Least experienced troops could be killed. The average exp of those that remain then increases. Often happens with generals and routers.

I gain experience by killing the enemy. Using my smallest units if possible. Best improvements occur after battle. By careful merging and retaining its possible to isolate the most experienced troops and use them to train up a full strength elite unit. Its not unusual to gain experience quickly in cavalry units and have silver exp units within ten years or less.

Ah, now I understand! Thanks Severous!

Oh I forgot. I wanted to ask this. When enemy army besieges my settlement, I lose some soldiers ( same when I siege them) every turn. That goes on my nerve, I don't care about few more less enemy soldiers,
but I care about my own man! Is there a way to disable this? Thanks!
