My computer has started to bleep

What the **** is it playing at now?

It didn't originally happen, and it only happens now during computer games. Company of Heroes is the worst offender, followed by Sid Meier's Railroads and now even EUIII is offering up the occaisional bleep. It doesn't happen all the time, but having played CoH for a little while it will innevitably begin to beep every two seconds until you alt-tab to desktop.

So what the **** does this computer want from me now?

Check your temps - could be an overheating warning.

I don't know.. I used to have that problem (pretty much exactly like you described) and it was my video card overheating. Once I stopped that, I've not had more beeping.

Maybe it is then. It is warmer than it should be. So then, how to deal with this before I buy a new fan or something?

1. Open the side of your case.
2. Remove dust from fans.
3. Place side back on.
4. Pray.

Well, it worked for me

Failing that:
1. Open side of case
2. Point desk fan at case
3. Switch on
4. Wait for winter

It would be the heat warning. Either:

a) Make sure your cooling system (fans etc) are working properly and if not fix it.

or

b) Go into the BIOS and turn the warning off, thereby removing that annoying sound...but leading to the greater annoyance of a dead computer.

(I'd choose option A personally).

if it gets worse, bathe it in liquid nitrogen. if it doesnt break it you may have made yourself a super fast high temp super conducting computer...or you should just work our what cause the beeps

Download speedfan.
Remove dust from fans.
Remove the side of the PC.

Can you tell the pattern of the Beeps? Long beep short beeep? When a computer beeps its trying to tell you something is wrong.

Usually a pattern of beeps only occurs at post - not necessarily during the operation of the OS (although, I could be mistaken.)

Make sure the fans are actually spinning - might save you soem time in determining the problem.

I'll tell you what I tell people at work who ask the same question. It's the computer elves fighting the computer gremlins. If your computer has an issue, the computer gremlins overwhelmed the computer elves, pay someone to put more computer elves into your computer.

When I say that they actually understand me more than when I try to explain what they could do to fix the problem.

On to you however Paul d, it is most likely just your fans and your hard drive(s), which is normal. An overly noisy hard drive can mean it is failing however.

In the winter, I put my computer by the window, with the fan there blowing cold air into it.

In the summer, I moved the air conditioner. So I'm pretty safe as far as GPU heat goes.

I usually get around 50C playing SPQR on more than max graphics.

Yeah, it's the heat. Dusted the fan but didn't help much.

Well, as I said, a desk fan is a good alternative until you can buy some real gear

If you can, open it up and dust it out. A mate of mine had his computer switching off periodically without any input from him. I cleaned up the inside, including the heatsink on the CPU, and it's been fine since. Get some cotton buds and tissue paper, and probably some cocktail sticks as well, and get to work.

You don't need to, your computer worked fine as it is before right?

So just clean out the dust, make sure all the fans work, and if that hasn't fixed it, then you most likely have to reseat the heatsink over the cpu.

If you do need to do this I'd recommend using Artic Silver 5, or Artic Silver Ceramique.
