Default My first post and question.

I've been trolling these forums for the last few days looking for information on what is probably a relatively simple question to answer.

But, how does one get to play other factions rather than just the starting ones? I'd really like to try Spain and Macedon, mostly.

On a side note, I wish I would've found this site sooner, there is a ton of good information available here.

    Thanks in advance.

Go to Activision\Rome: Total War\Data\World\Maps\Campaign\Imperial Campaign\descr_strat. You'll see a list of unlockable, unplayable and playable factions. Put all faction on "playable" and here you go.

Don't do this with Rebels and the Senate, though. You might get trouble while playing.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

Just tried it out, thank you for your help.

    *edit

After trying to start a game with either Dacia, Scythia or Spain the game crashes to desktop. All I did was type each factions name from "unlockable" to underneath "playable." Wonder what I did wrong... heh

You did not still leave them under unlockable as well did you? When you are done, it should look something like this:

; Custom campaign script generated by Romans Campaign Map Editor

    campaign imperial_campaign
    playable
    romans_julii
    romans_brutii
    romans_scipii
    egypt
    seleucid
    carthage
    parthia
    gauls
    germans
    britons
    greek_cities
    macedon
    pontus
    armenia
    dacia
    numidia
    scythia
    spain
    thrace
    slave
    end
    unlockable
    end
    nonplayable
    romans_senate
    end
I always put the senate as nonplayable, since if you play as them and click the senate tab it crashes the game. Plus if you want to be able to select the Rebels to play, you have to leave at least one other faction unplayable, as the interface will only display 20 factions when you start a new game.

No I didn't leave them in unlockable. I did, however, change it so everything was under playable and it still crashes on me.

I set it up to look just like what you laid out and it still dumps me.

Maybe I should try to uninstall and reinstall the game. I believe I'm using 1.5, or is it 1.6 that comes with BI?

Did you include all factions, including Rebels and the Senate? Don't do this! In either case, reinstalling the game and doing this again might solve your problem.

well i say you reinstall it. I always like to start on a clean slate!

supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

You need the text for the faction descriptions or the game will CTD.

Nope, I've done this without any text showing in the game. Or he might have erased some important file.

    Hi

I always thought a new install of RTW wants you to:

    - play the tutorial campaign.
This allows you access to the imperial campaigns

    - kill another faction
This unlocks more than just the initial handful of factions.

Only after doing that would I suggest you go into modding the game files. I believe the changes to the file suggestted have to be perfect. Nothing out of alignment, no extra (invisible) spaces or tabs at the start/end of lines.

Good luck sorting it out. Macedon is a nice faction to play. Lots of different cavalry and a rich Greece to capture and provide an impressive war chest. If all else fails come take a turn in the succession campaigns on this forum....we have both Macedon and Perthia going at the moment.

I thought by copying and pasting I would've avoided any troubles, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I've had the game a while but have only played Julii, Selucia, Germania, and Carthage for any period of time. So, I suppose I just hadn't beaten some of the factions I'd wanted to play.

I'll just reinstall the game and start from scratch as I'm not really into mods or anything.

I'll just try to pay particular attention to personally destroying a specific faction.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Oh, and as for the offer to partake in the campaigns, I'm not sure I'd be a popular choice. I have a very ponderous playstyle. I enjoy defense and slowly and methodically grinding out my enemies. I'm afraid I might be rather boring. haha

Before you reinstall, try one of the All Factions Playable mods in the Downloads area. There are a ton of them out there.
