    Icon10 The "best" AI

I was playing as Greeks and had both Messana and Syracuse. Carthage attacked me with a full stack consisting of:
    -1 unit general's bodyguard.
    -1 unit elephants.
    -2/3 units long shield cavalry.
    -2/3 units round shield cavalry.
    -2 units skirmishers.
    -1 unit balearic slingers.
    - The rest Iberian infantry.

I had an army consisting of:
    -1 unit General's bodyguard.
    -1 unit archers (38 of 80)
    -1 unit skirmishers.
    -3 units militia hoplites.
    -6 units hoplites.
    -2 units armoured hoplites.

The odds were equal. The resaults were:
    Men deployed: Kills: Men remaining:
    My army: 1003 1081 981
    Their army: 1239 24 158

They lost 87% of their army, I lost 2%. They killed their elephants by trying to smash my gate (stone wall) with them. All elephants died. The rest of the army ran around the towers, painting up themselves as targets for the "machine gun towers". When they managed to kill my first man, they had already lost 72% of their army. The rest got eaten by my phalanxes. THAT'S a stupid AI.

I bet Carthage deserves to be conquered and exterminated after this. If their leader is so stupid, then imagine the people .
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

    - Flavius Vegetius Renatus (in Epitoma Rei Militari, ca. 390)

I hate when you fight a battle in which you would have had zero casuaties, only to find that your only deaths were due to your own missile fire.

I hate that, and I also hate how the only units that seem to get experience in a battle (missiles excepting) are the ones that suffer a bunch of casualties.

I think that's because units get experience by kills/man in unit. So if you have two units with the same amount of kills, the one that in the end have less men will have a high ratio of kills/man, so it gain will gain "more experience".

That part is annoying because if I merge two injured units with 1 exp, the full stack will lose its exp the leftover 10 men will have 2 exp lol. How lame.

What difficulty level are you playing at?

I use to have this problem but now I only play on VH/VH and the AI seems to be better. Not sure if this is anyone else's experience as well.

It is well known that the Siege Assault AI in RTW is not very good.

However, The Carthaginian army described is nicely balanced. You were really lucky to be facing such an army - given that you had parity of forces you should have sallied and explored the tactical options of an infantry-based faction against some of the best cavalry in the ancient world.

I have lost count of the number of badly balanced enemy armies I have faced in my RTW playing career.

So, my advice is, go back to your last save and play the sally - after all crushing victories get boring after a while, it is much more interesting to play when the situation could still go either way.

Nah, it's still fun when crushing the computer at VH/VH. The funny thing is that they didn't stop after that army, they sent more to stop me when sieging Lilybaeum. That was more of a challenge!
