Fav Mercs

Big improvement in mercs in 6.4, about time they had more xp than regular troops, but which r ur fav/most usefull?
Goto luv them armored ele's, you just goto own a bit of africa just so u can get thouse baby's.
Cretan archers, just jummy, almost as good as a skirm, but longer range/ammo and luvery hats!
Illyrian mercs make great replacements for inf at a push, when a 3rd of ur stack just got munched, and u aint got time to retrain/reinforce, you can use them in ur lines.
Barbarian cavalry are a must, u get over twice as many men, and better charge bonus than most units inc noble cav, as Romans u notice hardly any units have a charge bonus, so these are a real necessary.

OMG reduced to bumping my own post, come on u lot, tell me u dont use any mercs? Would like some feed back about any1 useing "eastern" mercs as i aint been there yet?

Spartans definately, 300 of them and you've won the battle.

Some of my favorites are the Skirmisher Warbands, Baelaric Slingers, Barbarian Noble Cavalry, Numidian Cav, and the almighty armored elephants

Lt did a great job by putting those all new kind of mercenaries in the game! Makes it more fun.
I haven't expanded much (only Italy and just starting to get foot in Greece) so I haven't seen all the types. But Spartans are the coolest!

Cretan archers cause for soem reasons i cant make archers in italy and i can only in some citys in greece o.O.

My merc experience is somewhat limited in my current campaign but I've definitely appreciated the steadfastness of the Spartans and the punch of Cretan Archers. I've also used Merc Hoplites, Thespians, and Hoplite Swordsman in Greece in a pinch. I have been fighting stack after stack of Greeks and I only hold 5 of their cities. It is 179bc and I've killed 244k of them. Sometimes you have no other choice but to garrison and replenish with mercs.

Over in Gaul I occasionally use Barb swordsman and Cavalry but only rarely. I am not nearly as pressured by Gaul as I am by Greece. I only use mercs as a last resport and I make it a point to disband them all except Spartans and Cretan Archers once the crisis that forced their recruitment passes.

The only mercs I actively look to recruit are Spartans and Cretan Archers. Without them, my position in Greece would be much more tenuous. Regarding Spartans, I like the idea of "place and forget" as you know they will stay in the breach and hold it until they either win or die.
