when i try and move my infantry they dont stay in formation, the just go into a very long line. im not sure if it does it wen moving the whole army though.

During setup, put your units into the formation you want then group them. Test their movement by placing the formation in different locations. If you did it right then they should stay in formation.
another possiblity is that you have your forces wide spead over the battlemap that sometimes can also couse trouble compact formation tend to obay orders better then wide spead formations.

yes this is a Rome bug i think, when you have a large formation it gets confussed with it and does what it wants you to do. This can be really annoying. I think if you group them all together (press ctrl + A then press G) and then move them it will hold formation, then when you need to adjust the formation take them off group and do as you wish.
yes i hate this bug horribly. i would try to move my army closer to the enemy army and they get into 1 big line.
